New Jersey Honors It’s Own

I know about the Baseball Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, even the Computer Hall of Fame (yes, there really is one in San Diego), but now, there is a hall of fame for those who have claimed the Garden State their home. Today, the first 15 people will be inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. Right now, the hall of fame is only virtual – that is, there is no museum to hold memorabilia of those honored. But, officials are trying to raise money to make a permanent home a reality. When I … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: Good News for Sports Lovers and Bad News for Smokers

GOOD NEWS FOR SPORTS LOVERS I grew up in a house with four guys and every one of them was a sports fanatic (and still is). If your brother, father, son, or husband has dreamed of taking the wheel of a NASCAR racecar or slamming a stick into a NHL hockey puck coming at him at 120 mph make sure your summer travel plans include a stop in New York City. That’s where your favorite sports nut (male or female) can experience what life is like as a professional athlete. On May 7th the Sports Museum of America will open … Continue reading

A Unique Photo Exhibit

When you think of New Jersey what comes to mind? If you answered traffic, Bruce Springsteen, steak and smokestacks then you’ll feel right at home at a new photo exhibit that opens this weekend at South Orange’s Pierro Gallery, in a community center near Newark. The exhibit features more than a thousand images of the Garden State… but there’s a catch. Many of the photographs displayed in the exhibit have been created by online “photographers” who have never stepped foot in the state. Rather, these “digital artists” have used other people’s snapshots (though, some of the photos displayed have been … Continue reading

Endangered Piping Plovers in New Jersey

The endangered piping plover has been something of a conservation success story on the New Jersey beaches. The piping plover is a small, territorial shorebird. Like many human beach visitors, the piping plovers pick out their territory, settle into the sand, play in the water, and watch life go on around them. These birds return to their breeding grounds in late March and early April. After courtship rituals, the mated birds form shallow nests in the sand and line them with shells and small rocks. Plovers lay as many as four eggs at a time; the hatchlings can fly a … Continue reading

It’s no secret that the city makes some of the finest pizzas in the world, but this weekend chefs there are offering a one-of-kind pie to honor a special visitor. Patriotic Travel Destinations

Happy Fourth of July! Regardless of where you may be celebrating this Independence Day here’s hoping your festivities are safe and memorable. If you are one of the fearless ones you may be braving the crowds at some of the nation’s most popular historic attractions (think Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Mount Rushmore, etc.). However, if you are like me you will be spending your Fourth at home with a family cookout and backyard fireworks and making plans to visit some historic attractions when the holiday crowds dissipate. If so, here are a few you might want to consider: In a … Continue reading

Marriage Laws: New Jersey & Delaware

We’re continuing our series of looking at the various marriage laws from the 50 different states within the United States. June is a hot month for weddings and thousands of people will be exchanging their vows in wedding ceremonies taking place in backyards, Churches, temples, gardens and more. Not every state has the same laws governing marriage and marriage licenses, as we continue our trek through New England down the Atlantic coastline, we’re taking a look at New Jersey and Delaware. New Jersey New Jersey does not have a residency requirement. However, there are some specific requirements that brides and … Continue reading

Disney News: This is Disturbing

This news story came across my desk late last night and I have to say – I could hardly believe it when I read it. You may have heard this in the news too, the Disney Channel, a channel we put our faith in to provide our children, particularly our young children, with content that is as far from objectionable as you can get. Last Tuesday morning, at 9:30 a.m., toddlers and other young children tuning in to watch an episode of “Handy Manny” discovered a film depicting hardcore pornography. According to Comcast, the cable company that experienced the interruption … Continue reading

Good News For East Coast Commuters

Each weekday my uncle and cousin take the train in from New Jersey to get to their jobs in New York City. This week marked a new era for them and thousands of other train commuters with the introduction of New Jersey Transit’s first multilevel train car. It currently runs from Trenton to New York and yesterday, according to my family members, it was filled with (gasp!) happy commuters. The introduction of the new train car is the first step in a two-year effort that will result in putting 234 of the double-decker cars to use. The cars offer more … Continue reading
