Make Your Own Paper from Old Newspaper

I saw on a kids show once how to make your own paper from old newspapers and I just thought it was the coolest thing to do. It may not be as easy as going to the store to buy paper, but you will save trees and have the satisfaction of knowing that you made your own paper – how cool is that? You will need a food processor or blender (you may want to use one you don’t plan to put food in anymore), an electric iron, a wire hanger, a pair of old pantyhose, white glue, water, a … Continue reading

Robert Novak Diagnosed with a Brain Tumor

Long time Chicago Sun-Times columnist Robert Novak has been diagnosed with a brain tumor, just days after he was involved in a hit and run accident. Many people may remember Novak best from his 15 year run on CNN’s political show “Crossfire.” He has also been a contributor to Fox News. He received criticism in 2003 when he was the first to divulge the name of CIA operative Valerie Plame. The publisher of the Chicago Sun-times, which is also the home of Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper, said that Novak has been a “source of great pride” for the newspaper. … Continue reading

Using Newspaper in the Refrigerator

Here is an old trick that still works today. It will help keep your veggies crisp and fresh, and is a testament to how many ways and for how many purposes that you can use a newspaper. One thing we have a lot of in this house is newspaper and produce. I usually get at least two copies of the Sunday paper. We love reading the paper, but the double copy is mostly for the coupons. There are plenty of ways to stretch out using a newspaper. For example, you might want to check out the following articles that Nicole … Continue reading

The End of LIFE

I’m likely showing my age by disclosing the fact that many of my grade school teachers made reading Life magazine a required part of our classroom curriculum. I used to spend a lot of time studying the magazine’s large glossy pictures. And, I’d venture to guess that even if we are not the same age, you have likely paged through a copy of the magazine yourself in an office lobby or in the waiting room at your doctor’s office. I think it’s safe to say the magazine is an institution, which is why I was saddened to hear that Life’s … Continue reading

The Sunday Times

About a year ago I abandoned my local Sunday newspaper and took comfort in the arms of the grand old lady, The New York Times. I pay a small fortune for the privilege of receiving this beefy two-part Sunday paper, double bagged and waiting for me at the end of my driveway each weekend morning, but it is worth every penny. Much like getting the mail each afternoon, seeing the The Times lying there, just waiting for me to slip it out of it’s slightly transparent blue baggie, makes me as happy as schoolboy. To pile up the pillows and … Continue reading

Using The Comics As A Teaching Tool

Fellow parenting blogger, Kori, recently wrote a blog about how she uses the newspaper as a way to jump-start conversations with her teens. I have also found the newspaper to be an invaluable teaching tool. Every section can be used to teach a new concept or reinforce one that your kids are learning. One section I especially like is the comics, especially the Sunday section. One activity you can use to teach or reinforce the concept of sequencing is to take a three or four comic panel, cut it out and then give it to your child and then have … Continue reading

Squeezing Money from the Newspaper

I love the Sunday newspaper for its promise of thick colorful inserts of grocery coupons. I look forward to cutting the coupons and comparing grocery prices with the store sales flyers. Thanks to those coupons and flyers, the newspaper is certainly worth every bit of the money I pay for it every week. But, did you know that there are other ways to get more value out of the newspaper? Here are some of my favorite ways to squeeze some extra savings out of our newspaper. Store Coupons: In addition to the cents off on groceries, many stores also offer … Continue reading

Yoko Ono’s Plea For Peace

Good Morning! Have you had a chance to look at today’s New York Times yet? Just a few pages in there’s a full-page advertisement from Yoko Ono. Did you see it? At first glance I thought it was an ad about Yoko Ono, but upon further inspection I saw that it was in fact a message from the former Beatle’s widow to readers worldwide pleading for peace. More specifically Ono is calling for the anniversary of the death of her husband, John Lennon, to become a day of worldwide healing. In the very large ad, Ono urges readers to mark … Continue reading

Turkey Day Tidbits—Spared Birds, A Stuffed Student, and More

SPARED BIRDS They were destined for the oven and then someone’s dining room table, but fate stepped in and now two turkeys really have something to be thankful for today. President Bush granted a full presidential pardon to two turkeys during a Rose Garden ceremony yesterday. Mr. Bush announced that the turkeys were being taken off the chopping block and could now live their lives “as safe as could be.” Visitors to the White House website, voted to name the turkeys “Flyer” and “Fryer.” (Fryer was Flyer’s understudy, but he was reportedly nowhere to be seen during the ceremony.) And … Continue reading
