Relaxation For Your Personality Type

We’re all different. And we all relax in different ways! Lately, I’ve been having trouble getting my mind to shut up when I’m ready for bed. Sometimes I distract myself with television; other times I try a relatively simple (but effective) visualization technique: fully visualize (using all your senses) at least one thing for each color of the rainbow. A strawberry. An orange. A banana. A handful of blueberries. Leafy green spinach. A juicy purple plum. Food is easy because it quickly engages all five senses. Not enough to shut your brain down? Try three things for each color. Some … Continue reading

Meditation and Family Life

Ah…meditation. We’ve heard all the advice about how important it is to meditate; we know that we will fell calm and peaceful if we only take the time to let go of life’s stresses and learn to focus, meditate, stretch, chant, blah, blah, blah. To be honest, the people I know who are regular meditators are NOT people with houses full of children. They are either individuals whose children have all grown up, or they are childless folks who can not only meditate, but have altars and little fountains of trickling water right in the middle of their living rooms—at … Continue reading

Using Food to Change Mood

Prefer a natural alternative to changing your state of mind? While major chronic mood disorders require counseling and intermittent drug treatment, often we can make small but significant changes to our diet and lifestyle to assist us to get out of a bad frame of mind. Try these simple tips next time you have a case of the “blahs”. 1. Feeling Irritable? Maintaining steady blood sugar levels will help stave off sugar swings that can lead to irritability. Eating 5 to 6 small meals throughout the day and never missing breakfast can make for a much more stable mood. Supplementing … Continue reading

Fasting with a Purpose

Fasting each month is a way that each member can improve his spirituality. One thing that helps to make fasting more effective is to have a purpose while fasting. This helps you to focus your prayers and your thoughts while fasting. It can also help you listen to the Spirit for guidance. Here are four ideas on topics that you may consider making the focus of your fast. 1) You can fast to receive guidance and/or help for a problem that you are facing. This could be with your job, finances, a relationship or concern for a child. Many of … Continue reading

Slowing Down and Meditating

As members of the church we are counseled to care for our bodies. The fact that we view our bodies as gifts from our Heavenly Father helps us to realize the importance for caring for our bodies properly. Usually when we think of caring for our body we think of doing more, but today I am going to talk about doing less. It is true that we need to exercise. We need to eat healthy food and avoid sweets. We also need to make sure that we get plenty of rest. However I think it is too easy to ignore … Continue reading

Unencumber Your Life

I have often written about the importance of preparedness, but Bishop Keith B McMullin’s talk “Lay Up in Store” mentioned the importance of simplifying your life as part of preparedness. Bishop McMullin says: “As men of God, we turn from excess to that which edifies, for ‘that which doth not edify is not of God.’ If dealings or involvements or pursuits or schedules detract from putting God first, we must pare back and unencumber our lives.” Since reading this talk on Monday, I have really been thinking about this statement. It has caused me to do quite a bit self-reflection. … Continue reading

How To … Meditate

I’ve talked about meditation here before – but I wanted to discuss more about how to meditate and why I meditate. When I was in junior high, I participated in the drama club and the speech club. We had a great teacher, her name was Mrs. Garza. She was a brilliant woman and she was excellent at coaching us through speeches, dramatic presentations and learning impromptu. One of the things she also taught was guided meditation – in part it was to help cope with stage fright and anxiety. To understand, first of all, the meditations she used were not … Continue reading

Boost Your Brain Power With Meditation

Your brain is like a muscle. Without exercise, it can begin to weaken — just like any muscle. Researchers from Harvard University have been studying the effects of meditation on brain erosion, with surprising results. In your early 20s, your brain begins to erode — specifically the areas that deal with decision making, attention span, and memory. The Harvard study compared the MRI scans of people who meditated daily with those of people who did not meditate at all. The long-time meditators had thicker brains in the areas that eroded in non-meditators: the areas that deal with attention, memory, and … Continue reading

Where is Your Secret Place?

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.’” (Psalm 91:1-2) A “secret place” is somewhere you can commune with the Lord; you can seek Him and pour out your soul. It’s a safe place where it’s just you and God; where the cares of the world cease. Sometimes we can get too wrapped up in our day to day life and forget the need to connect, just us with … Continue reading

My Year’s Reflections

The older I am getting (I know I am not that old), the more I appreciate how much things change for the good or bad as time passes. For instance, in the category of “bad” I have gained a lot of weight and become somewhat lazy. However, in the “good” category I have grown and matured in many different ways. I thought I would share the things I can see in my life (especially spiritually) that have changed for the good and consider how I could have done better. I hope this article to be an encouragement to you. Relationships. … Continue reading
