The Dilemma of Friends Spending the Night

There is an interesting dilemma taking place in our home with regard to my children’s friends. I always enjoy having them over and sometimes spending the night. I definitely prefer everyone hanging out here, where I can keep a better eye on things. But recently the issue of having friends sleep over has changed a bit. My youngest son, who is in 7th grade, has friends that are either in his grade or 8th. A couple of those guy friends (who are in 8th grade) are also friends with my 9th grade daughter. I have no problem with her hanging … Continue reading

Why Do Men Put Their Wives Down When Male Friends are Present?

In many cases, the behavior of men and women remain a mystery to each other. There are things about the opposite sex that we will never truly understand. Until we somehow can experience what the other thinks and feels, we can never fully grasp why each other carries out certain behaviors. One action that is usually greatly different among men and women is the way that each other is perceived and commented upon by their spouse in front of friends. Women tend to like to make their husband appear to be better when she describes him to her friends. She … Continue reading

Dating Woes

When it comes to teenagers there are a lot of dating woes. Heartbreak, disappointment, and confusion are just some of them. Although I do believe that in some cases (rare though they may be) it can work out, in most cases dating as a teenager creates unnecessary woes. My husband and I have never really had a firm plan when it comes to dating. When my children were younger we tossed around some thoughts and ideas. We figured it was best to wait until that time arrived. Well, we are there. Our oldest son turned 16 this month. It seems … Continue reading

Is Your Support Group Supportive (3)?

In previous articles we looked at problems caused by sexual relationships between members of the same mental health support group and also the destructive role of the group dominator. Today we look at the role of another very common factor in support groups: that of the group saboteur. The group saboteur comes in various guises, all of which are destructive. Ann had come to the group suffering from depression, but it soon became obvious that she had considerable problems other than depression. Problems that threatened the stability of the group. An accomplished academic, Ann liked to talk about her problems, … Continue reading

Should You Let Your Special Needs Child…gulp…Date?

If you’re like me, this topic makes you say, “Yikes.” There’s something really nerve-wracking about the idea that our special needs child might someday date. This is especially true for parents of children with cognitive disabilities such as Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, and so forth. These children can be particularly vulnerable and it’s hard to imagine them handling any kind of romantic friendship, no matter how innocent. (Let’s face it, it’s not always pleasant picturing our neuro-typical kids dating either.) Here are some tips I would offer: Don’t panic. First, recognize that often times these special adolescents don’t even … Continue reading

Mario Lopez Back with Karina Smirnoff?

Just which lucky lady IS Mario Lopez dating? Apparently, his dates include almost all the available women in Hollywood. As Michele reported, he was seen with newly single Britney Spears on the streets of Las Vegas last week, although her former manager Larry Rudolph was also tagging along, so I am not sure how much of a “date” this was. Eva Longoria, was present during many tapings of “Dancing with the Stars” wearing her “Vote for Mario” t-shirt. Although the two stars claim to be merely old friends, tongues have been wagging about a potential love match between these two … Continue reading
