Striving for Better Mornings

Last night I offered up some encouragement and ideas for ways that single parent families can make evenings more relaxing. While I was writing, I also mentioned that mornings can be an incredibly rough and stressful time—we are trying to get everyone up, fed, and out the door and for many of our families, this can be one of the toughest times of the day when it comes to organization. I thought we could brainstorm some ideas to make mornings go more smoothly in a single parent household too… Many of us have already figured out that if we get … Continue reading

Prepare Your Children for Learning with a Good Morning!

When focusing on your back to school plan, think about how your children begin their day. How you start your day can set the mood for the rest of it. In most cases a child that comes in crying and upset will remain shaken and out of focus for the majority of the class time. A child that comes into class cheerful and upbeat will have a much more successful day. Therefore, reconstruct your mornings so that you can give your children a great start for learning. Mornings should not be rushed, full of madness, and prone to family arguments. … Continue reading

Organize Your Mornings: Stick to the System

Okay, it’s time. The whole “make it up as we go” system of getting everyone ready and out the door in the morning just isn’t working. It’s definitely time to create a more organized system that will make mornings less chaotic. Gather your kids and your spouse or your roommates and work together to come up with a system that everyone can accept. When getting started, you might want to post a schedule. You can draw up a simple timeline on a dry erase board or a piece of poster board, or you can simply type it up on the … Continue reading

The Military Commissary – A Part of Your Benefits

I’ll admit it. I have no loyalty to any particular store when it comes to purchasing groceries. Sure, I may go to the King Sooper store that is only a few blocks away when I just need a gallon of milk. I like how they drop the price to $1.50 on it’s sell by date. (When you have a little boy at home who goes through a gallon of milk every two days, that milk doesn’t have time to go bad!) I also like to buy diapers at Sam’s Club. It just makes good sense to buy something like this … Continue reading

Our Day of Free Fun

Because we are on a limited budget, it sometimes takes a bit of creativity to have low-cost fun, and free is even better. Today was a good summer day in the free department for the kids. After an early morning dentist appointment (free, but not necessarily fun), we headed over to our local library for their Tuesday morning program. Today, the kids got to make their own bubble solution and wands and also experience making giant bubbles. We went home with the wands and a recipe to make our own giant bubble solution. We took advantage of the trip to … Continue reading

You can cut almost any of your shopping budget by 60 percent or more when you shop at local thrift stores instead of retail stores. Imagine getting designer jeans for $5 or a new-with-tags name brand dress for only $3. How about that new hot video game for $15 instead of $50? It is all possible when you use thrift stores as a valuable resource to save your family budget. Getting Over the Ew Factor If you haven’t visited a thrift store lately, you should stop by and take a look. What you see may surprise you. Most thrift stores, … Continue reading

Meal Planning When You are Busy

When you have three children, you cook when you can. That is why, although it is early Sunday morning, I am about to do some cooking in the kitchen to feed our bellies, and to feed our freezer. While I understand that some people don’t understand getting up early, for a natural morning person, this is the time that I get the most accomplished. It is a nice peaceful time for serving my family and soaking in all of our blessings. The house is quiet with few interruptions, and my energy level is high. It is good to take advantage … Continue reading
