Signs of Pain in Pets

Our pets are generous and over the top in showing affection; they can be very subtle when it comes to showing pain! Knowing your pet well — and noticing very small changes in behavior — can be key to detecting discomfort. In general, dogs can be more vocal and more dramatic about their pains. A dog may yelp, whine, limp, or hold up a hurt paw. My parents’ dog Becca is very dramatic about her aches and pains, and will limp very obviously when she’s achy (or maybe wanting attention). Cats, on the other hand, may simply hole up and … Continue reading

New Labels For Familiar Painkillers

By the end of 2007, you can expect to see new labels and stricter safety warnings on your over the counter pain relievers. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration proposed the new warnings in December, which would affect hundreds of prescription and nonprescription products. What will the warnings address? Acetaminophen (the pain reliever in Tylenol) will come with a warning about the potential for “severe liver damage” if they take more than the maximum daily dose, combine the pills with other drugs, or drink alcohol while taking the drug. NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Advil’s ibuprofen, aspirin, and Aleve’s naproxen) … Continue reading

Tip of the Day- Clean out your shoes

Ok, if I asked you how many pairs of shoes you own, how many of you could give me an honest answer? Do you have a few select pairs that you always depend on, or do you have a mountain in your closet that you dig through everyday for the perfect pair? Now, the harder question. Once you get that perfect pair on, are they killing your feet before the end of the day? Yes, fashion is important. Comfort is more important. If your shoes don’t fit properly you’re costing yourself. In the name of fashion women will commit all … Continue reading

The Prayer of Jabez: That I Not Cause Pain

“…that I may not cause pain!” This last plea we read in 1 Chronicles 4:10 from Jabez is the most humble one. It’s as if he recognizes that because of evil in this world, even we are sometimes used to hurt others. Often this is without intention. The Bible tells us to be sober minded (Titus 2:6 and 1 Peter 4:7). This is so we can be better aware of what’s going on around us. I believe it’s also so we will be vigilant not allowing the enemy to use us as a vessel to do harm to others. Consider … Continue reading

“I Feel Like I’m Falling Apart.” 8 Ways to Cope with Overwhelming Stress

Anyone who has parented a special needs child understands it’s an all-consuming responsibility. As parents (and especially mothers) we have a tendency to pour our whole heart and soul into the special care of our son or daughter. Our instinct to nurture takes over, and we expect to be the “rescuer” who will make everything all better. We run ourselves ragged. We worry; we agonize. We don’t eat right and get enough sleep. And this eventually causes stress to overwhelm our bodies. Stress Took Over My Life In a previous blog I wrote about my own personal battle with stress … Continue reading

What is Biofeedback?

Psychophysiology. Sounds like a made up science, right? But psychophysiology is the study of the mind body connection. Biofeedback uses machines to train a person to consciously regulate certain bodily functions. Biofeedback was pioneered in 1938, but didn’t become a popular subject of study until the 1960s. One of the original ailments studied and treated with biofeedback was migraines. For a biofeedback session, you will be hooked up to a device that records electrical impulses. If you are working on your heart rate, you may be using an EKG (electrocardiograph). If you are experiencing headaches, you may be using an … Continue reading

God’s 4:45 a.m. Message

At 7:20 last evening, my oldest son started complaining of his ear hurting. My husband decided while the urgent care was still opened, it would be better to get him in tonight and at least get him started on a prescription if he needed it. Sure enough, upon taking him in, the doctor said my son had a very red and swollen ear. Last night I was searching the house for Tylenol to give to my son as the Motrin alone wasn’t helping much. Those screams of pain coming from my son made me wish it was me there and … Continue reading
