Our First Letter

Rebecca was legally ours as the adoption was finally able to proceed after the mediation with the biological mother was successful in having her relinquish her parental rights. Part of the mediation agreement was to establish a post office box where the biological mother of our children would be able to send correspondences to the children. We had told her we would put the letters aside for when the children got old enough to understand what they were about. The conditions of our mediation were that we would send updates of all three children to her on a quarterly basis. … Continue reading

Mediation Part 2

We had denied the biological mothers request for visitation with any of the three children so we were thinking the mediation was not going to come to any sort of agreement. We are prepared to go to court but we are hoping that this would not happen. Prior to the mediation meeting we had decided on what we would and would not agree to. We knew visitation with any of the kids was out; there was no doubt that visitation was never going to happen. When we told her that visitation was out she truly looked disappointed. I totally understand … Continue reading

Hospital Crosses Line

Note: When I originally wrote this article, there were no statements available except from the mother and father and those that represent them. I looked up several articles to do this blog. The hospital and the police department have now added statements to the story in backing their position. I obviously am concerned about the health and safety of babies. As a result of ‘new’ information, I have changed this blog and am adding a follow up blog on our own story of hospital staff bullies. Look for it soon! I’ve written an incendiary title and I know it. This … Continue reading

Bad Parents Have Legal Rights

When our adopted children first came to live with us, the parental rights of their birth mother had not been resolved. This happens in many, if not most, adoptions. I will warn you that the process can be very frustrating. We have adopted five maternal brothers which involved two separate adoption proceedings. In the first one, there never was much doubt that she was going to drag it out as long as possible and then sign relinquishment papers. However, she threatened to contest the right to retain her parental rights in the second adoption. The birth mother of our boys … Continue reading

What about a Father’s “Right to Choose”?

I have very strong feelings when it comes to abortion, but the point of this particular article is the fact that fathers have no rights when it comes to deciding whether or not they want to become parents. If the mother wants the baby, the father is held responsible financially and he has no choice in the matter. If the mother doesn’t want the baby, she may end his or her life, without any concern for the father’s feelings. She may even be able to force him to pay for the “procedure” despite his objections. I’ve heard all the arguments. … Continue reading

Can Your Pediatrician Fire You?

Can you imagine your pediatrician firing you? Can you imagine how you would feel if the pediatrician informed you that you can no longer bring your child to their practice? It’s actually happening in some areas where parents are refusing immunizations for their infants for whatever reason. Some parents are not comfortable with immunizing an infant due to religious or medical practices. Still others would prefer to wait if their child has a cold. Many pediatricians will go ahead and give an infant their shots as long as the baby is not running a fever. If you’re like me, the … Continue reading

Putative Father’s Registry–Biological Father’s Rights

During the past 40 years the number of children born to unmarried parents has grown dramatically. Putative fathers (the alleged, named, or reputed biological father) of children born out of marriage have historically been given few rights when it comes to the wellbeing and upbringing of their children. Things have been changing in this area and putative fathers have challenged the termination of their parental rights when their child has been placed for adoption. The U.S. Supreme Court has affirmed putative father’s constitutional protection of parental rights when the father has established a substantial relationship with his child. A substantial … Continue reading
