27 Dresses (2008)

In the new DVD release “27 Dresses,” Jane (Katherine Heigl) is in love with the idea of love. She’s also in love with the idea of being needed, being important, and being there for everyone in her life. She has a huge crush on George (Edward Burns)her boss, but can’t get up the nerve to tell him, choosing instead to be indispensable in the hopes that he’ll realize how important she is to him. One night, while literally dashing back and forth between two weddings where she is bridesmaid, she meets Kevin (James Marsden) a cynical young man who asks … Continue reading

Untamed Heart (1993)

I liked it—I liked it not. I liked it—I liked it not. “Untamed Heart” was one of those movies that left me confused. I really liked the parts I liked, and really hated the parts I hated. I guess I should elaborate, huh? Marisa Tomei stars as Caroline, a waitress in a seedy diner. Her best friend is Cindy (Rosie Perez) and together they try to figure out life—Caroline’s is a mess. She’s dumped by guy after guy, she’s trying to finish beauty school and can’t seem to manage that, and she wonders if she’s just doomed to failure. One … Continue reading

Get Interested in Your Child’s Passions

I know, I know, you’re probably thinking that you have enough to manage just trying to keep control of a busy single parent’s schedule. “Now she’s telling me I need to take on all my child’s interests too! Where on earth am I going to find time for that?!” I am not preaching that we need to get all involved and take on our children’s passions as our own, but I do think that we need to find time to care and get interested in what they are interested in. It gives us a way to connect and it gives … Continue reading

Only Angels Have Wings (1939)

Geoff Carter (Cary Grant) is co-owner and operator of an airline whose business it is to deliver the mail high in the mountains in Chile. The route is treacherous and only the most skilled aviators can go through the mountain pass, and only if the fog has lifted. A man serving as a lookout lives in a hut in the mountains, and keeps in contact by radio. His word is law—when he tells them not to come, they don’t come. One day a young woman wanders into their airport while waiting for the next boat to leave the harbor. She’s … Continue reading

Thicker than Water (2005)

“Thicker than Water” was originally a made-for-television movie produced by Hallmark. Natalie (Melissa Gilbert) is a leading lawyer in a high-powered firm. Her father is a judge, and a long tradition of honor and respectability runs in their family. When her father passes away, Natalie doesn’t expect skeletons to come tumbling out of the closet, but they do. He left a box full of letters and pictures from his first wife, a wife Natalie didn’t know he’d had. To make matters worse, her name was Maggie May and she was a rodeo queen. Natalie’s not sure what to do with … Continue reading

Missing Teeth

I’ve heard of things ending up in strange places, but never as bizarre as this story which appeared in our local paper on Wednesday April 2. While swimming at Culburra Beach a woman took her false teeth, which were a little loose, out. She slipped them into the top of her swimming costume. This was fine, till a large wave crashed into her. Unfortunately she didn’t notice the false teeth had gone until much later. Without her teeth, she was restricted to eating soft food. But then a week later, someone found her false teeth and handed them in to … Continue reading

The Heiress (1949)

“The Heiress” stars Olivia de Havilland as a young woman named Catherine Slope, daughter of a well-to-do doctor. She has an income of ten thousand a year from her deceased mother’s estate and will get another twenty thousand when her father passes on, and that should attract the eye of many a young man. But Catherine is not pretty, and she’s not graceful or talented, like her mother was. Every day, her father tries to make her be more like her mother, but it’s just not happening, and he despairs that she’ll ever make a proper match. The only thing … Continue reading

August Rush (2007)

This is going to be a flip-floppy review. I did find a lot of good in the movie “August Rush,” but I can’t recommend it without including some reservations as well. Freddie Highmore stars as Evan Taylor, a little boy who was taken to an orphanage as an infant and has lived there ever since. He’s convinced that his parents will come back and find him someday, and this belief makes him the laughing stock at the boys’ home where he lives. He also has the uncanny ability to hear music in everything around him, and he believes this is … Continue reading
