PBS Games

I couldn’t let National Literacy Month pass without talking about the very fun PBS site for kids. PBS games are fun, colorful, easy to play, and educational. Many support reading skills. There are so many games for so many ages that I can’t list them all. Here though, are a few of my favorites. In Global Gizmo, under the Arthur Section, the player matches pairs of musical instruments from around the world. When you click on the pictures you hear what the instruments sound like. There is a link that explains where the instruments come from. Some are familiar like … Continue reading

Zoboomafoo

For those of you who don’t know, there is a PBS Kids show called “Zoboomafoo.” Zoboo — as he is affectionately called by the Kratt brothers, Martin and Chris — is a lemur who loves sharing his knowledge about different animals. In every episode, your child can learn a lot of information about another animal. I have only watched this show a couple of times, but my daughter loves it. The funny thing about this show is the way that Zoboomafoo is portrayed. In the beginning when Chris and Martin call to him, you see a real lemur jumping from … Continue reading

The Berenstain Bears

Who didn’t enjoy books about the Berenstain Bears when they were young? I know I did. Well, parents, there is a television show based on those books. PBS Kids has “The Berenstain Bears” for the young ones of this generation. I am in no way suggesting that the show takes the place of books — you all know that I LOVE to read. I am simply saying that if your children are going to watch television, they might as well watch something wholesome and educational, right? “The Berenstain Bears” television show is a great tribute to the books by Stan … Continue reading

The Good Night Show

PBS Kids Sprout has something a little different for our nighttime kiddies. Whereas NOGGIN network signs off at 6 p.m. (EST) every night and switches to “The N,” Sprout has a special show beginning at that time. “The Good Night Show” runs every night until 6 a.m. the following morning. Hosted by Emmy-nominated children’s favorite, Noel MacNeal and his friends Star and Lucy, “The Good Night Show” combines Sprout favorites with song, dance, and stories. You may know Noel MacNeal better as the voices of Bear from “Bear in the Big Blue House” and Kako, the best friend of the … Continue reading

PBS Kids Sprout Mini-Shows

There is a kids television station that we have on digital cable here called PBS Kids Sprout. It is almost like PBS Kids’s version of NOGGIN — it’s television for pre-schoolers. In addition to all of the PBS Kids shows like “Curious George,” “Sesame Street,” and “Caillou,” there are also what I like to call their “mini-shows.” Really what this means is that the shows are only about five minutes to ten minutes long, or they only play about five to ten minutes of the show’s episode. The following are some of PBS Kids Sprout’s mini-shows. Pingu Pingu is the … Continue reading

PBSParents.org

I was watching PBS Kids Sprout with my daughter yesterday when I saw an ad for PBSParents.org. Of course, I had to check it out. It has all kinds of advice for parents, and it contains activities, games, and even recipes that relate to your children’s favorite shows. There are nine parents guides, as well as six tabs across the top of the page to help you navigate the site. Each section relates to parents and their children. There are tips on child development, how to talk to your children, and even a place where you can pose questions to … Continue reading

Curious George: The Series

Curious George, that lovable, curious little monkey is back — and now he has his own series! “Curious George” is coming to PBS Kids this Labor Day! A few months ago, I wrote about a Curious George DVD — “Curious George Flies a Kite & Other Adventures.” The DVD includes three full episodes from the upcoming show. I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of this show and now I do not have to wait much longer. In less than two weeks, Curious George will be on television. Yes, we all have known Curious George from the books about him and … Continue reading

PBS Kids Sprout

“Hello, Sproutlets! Welcome to PBS Kids Sprout. We’re so glad you could join us. Use your mouse and find what you can play and do!” This is the greeting that you and your child will receive when you visit Sprout online. You know about PBS Kids, right? Well, do you know about Sprout? Sprout is PBS Kids for pre-schoolers. Just like many other network websites, Sprout has activities for many of its shows. There is a television schedule for Sprout, as well as games and videos from many programs. Like NOGGIN, in our area, Sprout is only available if you … Continue reading

PBS Kids

PBS has always had quality programming, whether for children or adults. Well, now PBS Kids is around for our children. PBS Kids also has a website that allows you and your child to peruse the PBS Kids programs. From “Sesame Street” and “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” to “Barney” and “Teletubbies,” you and your child are sure to find something that you will both enjoy. Upon entering the PBS Kids site, I decided to explore the section for “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” first because it was always a favorite of mine when I was young. Not only can you explore Mister Rogers’ house, … Continue reading
