Daddy During Labor

If you’re interested in feeling completely useless, Dad-to-be, get excited about labor. My wife recently gave birth to our first child (a boy to make a father proud) and I must say that I felt entirely useless. Even before he was born I had asked the midwife if she would obtain some hot water for me to make some tea because I was so exhausted I was falling asleep. Wait a minute (Finger wagging!) you didn’t DO ANYTHING! Your wife was in labor, in real pain, doing real work. Well, that’s true. My wife was in pain for a number … Continue reading

Is Your Preschooler More Tech-Savvy Than You?

You know you are in trouble when your 4-year-old is updating his Twitter account more often than he goes potty. Or your 3-year-old is posting quiz results to Facebook faster than he can pedal a Big Wheel. If the aforementioned scenarios sound outrageous to you then you’ve done a good job of saving your child from being sucked into cyberspace before most of his peers. According to a new study from Nielsen Online, nearly 16 million U.S. children ages 2 to 11 were online in May, and most of those kids are more tech-savvy than their parents. Given that revelation … Continue reading

Cleaning Up the Computer Clutter

Is your computer filled with clutter? Clutter in your computer can make you lose time, lose patience and even lose money. I have something to say about cutting the computer clutter. Our desktop machine has gotten so slow lately, you can literally take a quick shower and get dressed while a certain program is still launching. Some programs won’t even load all of the way, and the ones that do often have problems running. Because of this, the best thing to do is to re-image the machine, which basically means wiping everything off of it and starting from scratch. Other … Continue reading

Moms Rock at Tech Stuff

For all you tech-savvy moms, who have spent hundreds of hours retrieving lost computer files, installing programs to protect your children from online predators and creating spreadsheets to organize your kid’s lives, your hard work is finally being validated. A new study shows that good ol’mom is the most computer literate member in the family. Go MOM! Call it a gender thing, because the study also found that more than 94 percent of girls are computers proficient, compared to 88 percent of boys. The research conducted by Britain’s University of Hertfordshire included 4,600 children ages six to 14 and aimed … Continue reading

Good News for Laptop Lovers Taking Flight

I can’t count how many times I have been stuck behind an annoyed business traveler at an airport security checkpoint who spends precious minutes complaining to Transportation Security Administration agents about having to take his or her laptop out of its bag. I stand there (holding my carry-ons, my child and her backpack) staring at my watch contemplating how to politely tell my fellow flyer how much quicker we could all make it through the line if he would simply close his mouth and open his bag. It’s the rule. So deal with it and stop wasting other travelers’ time … Continue reading

Can You Get Your Kids to Stop Worrying About What Others Think?

Peer pressure is brutal. As parents, we may have done everything we can think of to bolster our children against the realities of peer pressure only to be disappointed to find that our child is still succumbing to worrying about what everyone else is saying and doing. Is there anything we parents can do to get our child to NOT be so concerned with what other people think? I think I am asking the question of questions for parents; one that parents have been asking themselves for decades (if not centuries). There is something about the socialization of the human … Continue reading

Stubborness Can Be an Asset

All of us in life need to learn to make responsible decisions. We all need to be alert to the peer pressure that comes from family, friends, work colleagues and a society that, on the whole, doesn’t know the Lord and follow His ways. It can also come from those who are Christian. So how do we handle such pressure? ‘The Competitive Edge – how to win every time you compete,’ is a helpful book for getting us on the right track with decision making and living with integrity. The book is filled with interesting anecdotes like the stance taken … Continue reading

Laptop, PC or Both?

Like many people, I have run the gamut working with all sorts of computers in the past twenty years. I cut my teeth on Macs, but had to learn to work on P.C.s at work with many different jobs. I have had to update and upgrade and wrestle with crashed hard drives and other mishaps. I have fallen madly in love with some computers and been a bit disappointed in others. With my home business, my computer really is my lifeblood—I could probably even say that it IS my office. A couple years ago, when I bought a new P.C.—it … Continue reading

The Effects on a Community

Firstly, sorry for the silence yesterday. I was too ill to lift my head off the pillow to join you all. In Lyn’s blog she detailed results of a survey on the effects of a happy, healthy marriage not just on the husband, wife and children, but on the community It set me wondering about this passage from 1 Samuel 8. The bible tells us nothing about Samuel’s wife and their marriage. Or about his sons until we come to the passage in 1 Samuel 8 when Samuel was old and appointed his sons judges over Israel, verse 1. Then … Continue reading

When Children Start Imitating Their Peers

It can be incredibly cute when babies and toddlers start to mimic those around them. After all, that is how children learn to talk and behave–by imitating those around them. When our children get to preschool or start being more social and making friends, however, they can start to pick up habits and traits from their peers that we are not so crazy about. What can be done when a child starts to imitate unsavory behaviors, speech patterns, and traits that are coming from the peer group? The first thing to realize is that this imitation is incredibly normal! I … Continue reading
