Every Workout Has A Purpose

Every single workout you do, whether it’s the hundredth time you’ve gone for your walk or the first time, has a purpose. You have to be sure to give every work out you perform a purpose whether you imagine it’s there or not. Life Has Meaning If you’re thinking that a workout means just that – some physical exercise that stresses your muscles, burns fat and more. This is a valid point of view. But that’s not all there is to a workout. The simple truth is that life has meaning and so does every single workout that you perform. … Continue reading

Balancing Our Lives

Fitness is more than just exercising regularly. In fact, fitness is about balancing the body, the mind and the self. These three areas are what we need to take into consideration when we are caring for ourselves. This balance begins with the mind. It is a complex and powerful part of ourselves. It desires knowledge and mental stimulation. We can find mental stimulation through: Reading books and newspapers Watching educational programming Taking classes Doing crosswords and puzzles More It’s important that no matter what your exercise and fitness goals are that you keep your mind active and stimulated. Is Exercise Safe for Me?

While I’m asking everyone to join in on the Spring Forward to Action Challenge this weekend, I think it’s also important to answer some key questions before we get there. The first key question to answer is whether or not exercise is safe for you to do. The answer: People of any age who are not at high risk for serious health problems can safely exercise at moderate intensity. Moderate intensity is 60% or less of your maximum heart rate. Too Thin? Oh Yeah

Believe it or not, there really is such a thing as too thin. It’s a little talked about issue in fitness because of the love affair with obesity. But people can be too thin. There are plenty of examples out there of men and women alike that literally can’t put on weight. They can work out. They can life weights. They can do all the right things. But they still don’t gain weight nor can they bulk up. Low weight, underweight and too thin people face health risks just as those who are overweight or obese do. More often than … Continue reading

Dear Coach Wilburn

Dear Coach Wilburn, Not sure if you would remember me, but I was in your 4th, 5th and 6th grade gym classes about 22 years ago. I was the student that thought you’d lost your mind when you made me do push-ups. Remember my half-hearted, bellyaching attempts to do even one? Okay, I’m sure I wasn’t the first. Maybe you remember my complaining about volleyball? I hated that game. I didn’t want to get hit in the face. Of course, I adored war ball where I was supposed to get hit in the face. Yeah, okay, I’m pretty sure I … Continue reading

S.H.E. – Strong, Healthy, Empowered

A recent study from Minnesota presented to the American Heart Association’s 46th annual conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention (try saying that five times fast) was called S.H.E. S.H.E. stands for strong, healthy and empowered. Personally, I enjoy the definition, but what does S.H.E. mean? S.H.E. was a two year study conducted in Minnesota and the results suggested that strength training exercises performed just twice a week would reduce the risk for women with regard to cardiovascular disease and other related conditions. Strength training is about working against resistance. It’s about building muscle and bone strength as well as … Continue reading
