Dealing with the Elements

I’m sure you are familiar with the expression, “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.” The saying could easily be applied to photography especially when you’re scheduled photo shoot is interrupted by Mother Nature’s whims. I was reminded of this last week when I was trying to snap a shot of my daughter standing next to the first buds of spring. On this particular day it wasn’t my daughter who wasn’t cooperating, rather it was Mother Nature’s high winds that were causing problems for me (and my camera). It took me nearly 10 minutes to finally figure out that if … Continue reading

Photo Album Revelation

In a previous blog I admitted to being a snap happy parent. I also noted that since my daughter’s birth (more than 3 years ago) I have taken nearly 9,000 photos of her. That’s 9,000 printed images that have been sorted and placed in photo albums or frames. Needless to say my photo album collection is quite vast. Given that the average photo album holds up to 200 4×6 pictures (I do have some that hold up to 500-plus) I have roughly 40 albums sitting on a single bookcase in my living room. I would love to say that each … Continue reading

Are You All Caught Up?

Is there really such a thing as being caught up in the scrapbooking world? Aren’t we always taking photographs, and aren’t we always feeling creative? I would think that this question would retire after awhile, but I actually hear it a lot. “Are you caught up?” Personally I think the question is king of subjective and is honestly different for any person who is scrapbooking. It sort of seems to depend on an individual scrapbookers goals and what they might hope to accomplish with their scrapbooking hobby. In that same aspect, one can also argue that if you are a … Continue reading

A Unique Photo Exhibit

When you think of New Jersey what comes to mind? If you answered traffic, Bruce Springsteen, steak and smokestacks then you’ll feel right at home at a new photo exhibit that opens this weekend at South Orange’s Pierro Gallery, in a community center near Newark. The exhibit features more than a thousand images of the Garden State… but there’s a catch. Many of the photographs displayed in the exhibit have been created by online “photographers” who have never stepped foot in the state. Rather, these “digital artists” have used other people’s snapshots (though, some of the photos displayed have been … Continue reading

Photo Fun with Kids

My daughter is amazingly crafty for someone whose mother has trouble sewing the buttons back on shirts. That’s why when it comes to tackling arts and crafts projects I tend to stick with ones that include as few steps as possible. For the past five months my daughter and I have been working on various photo projects for my grandmother. After she suffered a massive stroke she was moved into an assisted living facility and her room was in serious need of some personalized decorations. I detailed some of the ways we spruced up her room in previous blogs and … Continue reading

World’s Largest Photo Album

I don’t own it, but with the amount of photos I take on a weekly basis I certainly could. Recently, I went online looking to purchase a massive photo album. I wanted to buy the largest album possible. That’s when I discovered the world’s largest photo album was not for sale… but it does exist. In fact, the record-breaking album measures 9 feet wide by 12 feet tall and reportedly requires two people to turn each page. And as you might have already deduced it was created by a company looking for a little positive PR. Last year Dodge broke … Continue reading

Whether you are shooting indoors, outdoors, during the day or at night there are a number of factors that can prevent you from snapping that frameworthy shot. I’m all for taking pictures at the beach or in a … Continue reading

Preparing for Holiday Photo Shoots

I know. I know. Some of you haven’t even looked through the photos you shot at Christmas, and Easter is less than two weeks away. Time waits for no man and that goes double for overworked parents who desperately need to find room on their camera’s memory card to accommodate Easter shots. So what if your tulips are buried under six inches of snow. Spring like temperatures may not arrive in time for your holiday get together, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get your camera out and document your annual family gathering. Here are some tips to help get … Continue reading

Making Photo Easter Eggs

I recently returned from Hawaii where my beloved grandmother has been placed in a life care center following a severe stroke. While there I learned from her therapists the important role photos play in a stroke victim’s life. Pictures of family members, pets, and everyday objects are used in various therapy sessions including speech and cognitive restoration. I am a snap happy parent to begin with, but the therapist’s information inspired me to take even more pictures than usual. (At last count I snapped and printed more than 700 images while in Hawaii.) Currently, my grandmother’s room is filled with … Continue reading

Tips to Consider When Taking Group Shots

One of my main goals in taking my recent trip to Hawaii (other than spending as much time as possible with my ailing grandmother) was to get as many group shots of various family members as possible. Obviously, taking group shots is a bit more challenging than taking a photo of a single subject. Timing is critical given that you are trying to coordinate and manage multiple individuals, along with lighting and background interference. Still, there are ways to capture frameworthy shots of your favorite people gathered together at the same place at the same time. Here are some tips … Continue reading
