Unique Italian Dishes—Pine Nuts and Pizza

If you are like my brother then you are probably asking yourself (or in his case, his wife) why anyone would want to ruin a perfectly good pizza by topping it with pine nuts. Well, it’s not. (At least not in these recipes, click here for a pine nut pizza.) The pine nuts are for a vegetarian ravioli and the pizza… well, the pizza gets a healthy dose of cheese, chicken, bacon, artichoke hearts and baby spinach. As you can tell neither dish is particularly traditional, but that’s what makes them so uniquely delicious. If you are tired of serving … Continue reading

End of the School Year Pizza Party

It may feel like summer has already started but kids around here are still in school for another 10 days. That means I have about a week to help my friend make homemade pizzas for her son’s end of the school year party. Because of budget restraints his teacher was going to nix their annual shindig this year. (With the price of food the way it is these days I don’t blame her.) That was until my pal came up with the brilliant plan to make her own pizzas and celebrate the end of the school year and her son’s … Continue reading

Save Money—Make Your Own Pizza

I think my jaw is still on the tile floor at my local supermarket. It hit the ground yesterday when I went to grab a frozen pizza from the freezer. My young daughter loves pizza and twice a month she is allowed to indulge in her favorite frozen classic-—thin crust pepperoni and cheese. The brand we buy typically sells for $3.33 a piece or 3 pizzas for $10. I usually grab three pies and we are set for more than a month. But yesterday when I went to replenish my supply I noticed that the neon 3 for $10 sign … Continue reading

Pizza for Breakfast

My best friend loves eating pizza for breakfast. She always orders a large pie so that she is guaranteed a few extra pieces to munch on the next morning. Frankly, I find the idea of biting into a cold slice of pepperoni, mushroom and black olive pizza (her favorite) rather revolting. Yet she swears the flavor only gets better with age. Still, I can’t stomach the thought of sinking my teeth into hardened cheese and chilled oil clumped on a cardboard crust… first thing in the morning. Which is why on my pal’s 23rd birthday (nearly a decade ago) I … Continue reading

Pizzas with Pizzazz

Believe it or not this blog was inspired by Valorie’s recent post discussing the pros and cons of playgroups. I (or rather, my daughter) belong to two different playgroups. One in the city we currently live in and one in the city where I used to work. (They are about 30 miles apart from each other.) We typically meet about three times a month. The kids have a ball playing with each other and the moms enjoy swapping anecdotes and war stories. Oh, and did I mention food was involved. Our playgroups have evolved into mini potlucks and on special … Continue reading

Ethnic Pizzas

My 3-year-old daughter used to be a picky eater, but in the last year or so she has really learned to embrace new foods. Each day I am pleasantly surprised by her bold menu choices. Okay, maybe they aren’t that bold—-she still sticks to her core favorites and it is up to me to find new ways to turn those ingredients into new dishes, but I am fine with that. In fact, it helps me to grow as a cook, and there’s nothing more gratifying than having someone devour your latest culinary creations. The following recipes are specifically designed for … Continue reading

My Favorite Freebies at Dillons 12/12 – 12/18

There are some pretty good deals this week at Dillons (finally – it’s been a while!). I’m in Kansas City, and I’m not sure how widespread these deals are. Dillons is part of the Kroger company, so I imagine that some of the same deals can be found in Kroger stores in other parts of the nation, but the sale dates may vary. Please leave a comment with your location to tell me if you’re having luck with these deals too! Oh – by the way, Dillons doubles coupons. In my area, any coupon $.50 or below is doubled; and … Continue reading

Tasty Travels

If you are a fan of pizza pies then you might consider hopping on the next flight to Naples, Italy. It’s no secret that the city makes some of the finest pizzas in the world, but this weekend chefs there are offering a one-of-kind pie to honor a special visitor. Naples’ world-class pizza makers have invented a pontiff’s pizza in recognition of Pope Benedict XVI one-day visit to the city to celebrate Mass and attend a meeting. Chefs at one of Naples’ most famous restaurants, the bastion of Neapolitan cooking Ciro a Santa Brigida came up with the idea on … Continue reading

Stockpiling Pizza

Pizza is such a great family food. Everyone seems to love it, and it is great to have on hand for parties. But, buying pizza out can get pretty expensive, so I usually make it myself. For about $2, sometimes less, I can make two large pizzas. There are sometimes, though, that it is really helpful to have stockpiled pizza on hand. Birthday parties, are a good example of when having lots of pizza that can be made quickly is convenient. And there are those weekends, when we are rushing out to one activity or another, leaving little time to … Continue reading

Papa John’s 99 Cent Pizza (with purchase)

With three teenagers in the house, we eat a lot of pizza. Our favorite pizza place of all time is Tony & Alba’s in Mountain View, CA. Whenever we’re in Silicon Valley, we make it a point to stop in for their garlic pizza. It’s not something to get for a romantic evening, but the taste is fantastic! My kids are a little pick…er, “particular” when it comes to food. Growing up, we ate what we were served (burritos and tacos, mostly. Yum!). And we were grateful for it. Somewhere along the lines – probably from their first bite – … Continue reading
