Where Did the Summer Go?

A week ago I complained to anyone who would listen that the local bargain store was clearing out sunscreen and no longer had the zinc oxide I wanted. I couldn’t believe they would pack away those products in the middle of July when the weather was still plenty hot and sunny. But there were boxes where they were packing up summer things and unopened boxes with school supplies. Yesterday I complained about all the back to school sales going on. I said things like “couldn’t they just let us enjoy our summer”, and “we’ll worry about that next month”, and … Continue reading

Options for Summer Fun

My children have ten days left of school. Sometimes by this time of year, I am tired of the routine of mornings, homework, and packing lunches and am ready for school to be over. This year isn’t one of those years. Summer has really snuck up on me. I’ve got to get some stuff planned for the boys. They are all much too old to be interested in the sand box and bubbles. I do want them to have a lot of down time this summer, unscheduled fun – those days where they can just play and be creative. But … Continue reading

A Fun Shopping Tradition

Yesterday my husband and I took our annual “day off”. We are both so busy we need this day to get our Christmas plans straight. It’s a great tradition. I know a lot of women do all the shopping by themselves. I like to include my husband. Particularly now that the boys are older they have a lot of technical gadgets, games and software on their lists. He knows which are worthwhile and he knows the best places to get those kinds of things. And I really feel like he should be the one to pick out gifts for his … Continue reading

Planning for Holiday Fun

The day after Thanksgiving is a great day to do a little planning for December. I don’t like to fight the crowds, today. I like to stay home with a piece a pie, a fire, a pen and a calendar. Our paper has a listing of upcoming local events. I penciled in parades, the special lights at the zoo nights, and the dates of a local production of the Christmas Carol. I wrote in dates of Christmas parties that I knew about. The kids and I figured out a good day to put up the tree and to decorate the … Continue reading

Labor Day Weekend – Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall

Labor Day weekend is almost here. We are looking forward to the annual hot air balloon festival and four day weekend. Four days off from school will be a nice break and a chance to catch up just a little on chores and homework. Many people consider Labor Day to be the end of the summer. It’s a good weekend to throw an end of summer party. Even though summer is ending, there’s still time for a couple of afternoons at the lake, a few more picnics, a few more hikes before the snow hits. We’ve had such a hot … Continue reading

Planning Summer Fun

School got out a week ago. Normally our first week off is a do as little as possible week. We are all so glad to be home and to have free time that we don’t need a lot to entertain us. This week though, we’ve been off visiting relatives. I’m not sure yet if we’ll jump into our summer when we return, or if we will need a few days of doing hardly anything at all. I really enjoy the lazy days of summer, but I also think we need some fun plans. If we don’t have things planned, or … Continue reading

Planning Little Things for a Fun Year

In a previous post, I talked about scheduling fun on the calendar. This time of year is a good time for fresh starts. Many people make resolutions to eat healthier, get organized, or start an exercise program. I want to have more fun. Not just because I’m because I’m a Family Fun blogger, but because I know these years will pass fast. I want to give my children the gifts of my time and interest, new experiences, and fun. I’m not just talking about the big things like vacations and trips to amusement parks, but the little things—walks, picnics, a … Continue reading

A Family Calendar – A Year of Fun

My friends know that when I say “I put it on my calendar” that means I’m committed to be being at that event or activity unless someone gets sick. They laugh at me when I say “I do what my calendar tells me to.” I’m only half way joking, though. I can’t hold all the appointments, after school activities, and carpool schedules in my head. It’s time to pick out a calendar for next year. I spent some time online browsing calendars for 2007. I love beautiful calendars, pictures of mountains and impressionist paintings and photos of wonderful travel destinations. … Continue reading
