Parenting with Poetry

I admit I’m a little biased, but I think childhood and poetry just seem to go together. With nursery rhymes and learning songs, children’s books of poetry, and the innocent penchant kids have for wanting to put words together in fun, playful ways–poetry is a natural in the parent’s arsenal of communication techniques. If you don’t believe me, try making up a poem the next time you are talking to your child about getting dressed or putting away toys: “We are going to pick this up/ But we won’t feed it to the pup/ Instead we’ll put it in the … Continue reading

More Adorable Christmas Poetry for Scrapbook Layouts

Hopefully you are taking my advice, and scrapbooking through the holiday season. You might be getting caught up scrapping pictures from the year, or perhaps from Christmas’ past. Christmas time is especially wonderful when it’s seen through a child’s eyes. So even if you do not have children, perhaps you have a niece or nephew or grandchild you can scrapbook about. If you don’t have any of that, borrow a child. No I’m kidding. But the magic of Christmas can usually be found on a child’s face during the holiday season. Seeing the twinkle in their eyes, the sweet smile, … Continue reading

Christmas Poems for Scrapbook Layouts

Poetry is one of my favorite “embellishments” to include on my layouts. I try to find something that coordinates with the theme, or the feel of the pictures. At holiday time it’s no different. If it isn’t poems, it’s quotes. Because I enjoy doing this, I have amassed quite a collection of poems that would work on your Christmas layouts. I thought I would share a few that you might be able to use on your scrapbook pages this holiday season. Even if you don’t have children to scrapbook about, these can be used in other ways. Just print them … Continue reading

Need to Scrapbook Halloween? Ideas and Poems For That Spooky Night

To put me in the mood to actually go back and scrapbook our Halloween, I have been spending some time going through un-scrapped photographs of all of the previous Halloween’s. The photographs make me smile as I see my children in various costumes. Or sitting amongst pumpkins in the middle of the pumpkin patch. It is so cool to see how much they have changed and grown over the years. Halloween has never been one of my favorite holiday’s even though the season carries my favorite – that of Autumn. While the leaves are changing and the air is crisper, … Continue reading

Scrapbooking Your Autumn Photographs

I probably enjoy scrapbooking the autumn season far more than I love scrapbooking any other time of year. With the snow and ice all around me, I actually miss the natural colors of fall. The greens and browns, the oranges and reds. They are beautiful to look at, and I absolutely love incorporating them into my layouts. It’s not only challenging but it’s fun and takes me back to those crisp autumn days before the white blanket covered my world. Our leaves in Missouri changed early this year, so I was able to snap many pictures for several weeks of … Continue reading

Helping Your Child Deal With Emotions Through Creative Expression

Creative expression through writing and art can be a very therapeutic technique for children with emotional problems including depression, anxiety, self-hatred and rage. At home, you can encourage your child to deal with painful emotions by providing different kinds of freedom in creativity. One of the greatest outlets for powerful, overwhelming feelings is through art. Adoption Poetry: Not All Roses and Peaches!

It wasn’t all roses and peaches. It wasn’t all happy and joyful. The search for my biological mother was painful, grueling and time consuming. I would never say it wasn’t worth every moment, but it was still all those things and more. During a point in my search when I found that my biological mother did not want contact, I wrote this piece of poetry. I am choosing to share it because of the comments and messages I have received in regards to my search being peaches and roses and needing to recognize that they aren’t all that way. I … Continue reading

Adoption Poetry: After the Initial Contact

My outlet has always been writing, and because of that, I have accumulated quite the nice possession of original poetry and essays by yours truly. Always very hesitant to share with just anyone, I finally have let that go, and decided to place some of them here. So on this beautiful Monday morning, I thought I’d share just a couple of poems that were written shortly after the first contact that my biological mother and I had with each other. The feelings were so raw, and so unpredictable back then, it’s interesting for me to go back and read them. … Continue reading
