Lesser-Known Programs with Shorter Timeframes: Europe, the Caribbean, Latin America

My last blog offered some general information, thoughts and cautions about adopting from countries with lesser-known, perhaps newer adoption programs with shorter wait times than many other country programs. It also profiled two Asian countries with such programs. This blog presents countries in the Caribbean, Latin America and Eastern Europe which have relatively short timeframes for adoption. Jamaica is a very new program begun in October 2008. It is offered through the adoption agency Hands Across the Water (you can also contact this agency, and agencies working in all the countries described here, through the contact wizard at RainbowKids.com, described … Continue reading

Latin America vs. Europe Dispute Resolved

A few months back I’d written about a the Latin America vs. Europe dispute Wayne and I’d been having. To reiterate: we’ve both been wanting to go on vacation out of the States, but we haven’t been able to agree on where. He wants to see Latin America; I want to see Europe. We finally found a way to settle it once and for all. The Contest Because of the current economic situation, it’s not the best time to head to Europe. I know that. And Wayne really knows that. (The accountant in him was raising objections left and right.) … Continue reading

European Island Adventures

Whereas it might not appear in my writings as though I have an appreciation for any other island than the one I grew up on I really do have a great affinity for all floating oasises the world over. I mean, really, who doesn’t dream of taking an island vacation, especially to a place that doesn’t include a slew of other vacationers trying to get in some serious R&R? If you are looking to escape to an island with deserted beaches, fascinating culture, and historical sights, then consider visiting the following summer hot spots: GOZO The island of Gozo in … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: One More Faux European Hot Spot and Swinging Golf Savings

In a previous blog I provided tips on how you could save on your summer jaunt abroad (F.Y.I.–one British pound currently costs $2) by getting your Euro-fix in the States. From Wisconsin to Texas, New York to Michigan the good ol’ US of A is chock full of destinations that are overflowing with European flair. One city that I failed to mention in my previous blog is Tarpon Springs, Florida. The sunny locale is oozing with Mediterranean charm. More than a century ago Greek immigrants traveled to Tarpon Springs and turned it into one of the leading areas for sponge … Continue reading

Travel Tips: Instead of Europe Consider… Part 2

It’s no secret that traveling to Europe right now can cause a serious dent in your family’s budget. Which is why most Americans are staying close to home instead of crossing the pond to get their Euro fix. However, as I mentioned in my previous blog vacationing in the United States doesn’t mean you are limited to a trip filled with hot dogs, apple pie and baseball stadiums. If you know where to go you can experience European luxury without having to flash your passport or go bankrupt in the process. Take a look: TEXAS Why fly to Germany when … Continue reading

Travel Tips: Instead of Europe Consider…

With the current state of the economy weighing heavily on the minds of just about every family that operates on a budget, plans for extravagant vacations have been all but eliminated. Unless you are a lottery winner or generate an Oprah-like salary you are not likely to be taking a costly transatlantic flight to Europe anytime soon. With the dollar plunging to record lows against the euro, the British pound and other European currencies, the good ol’ US of A is looking more and more like a viable summer vacation destination. However, if you have your heart set on experiencing … Continue reading

Luxury Travel: Europe

Last night as I was watching FOX News I saw yet another story on the weak state of the U.S. dollar. I’m as guilty as they are. Looking through the Families.com archives I noticed that I have written about the pathetic downfall of the dollar at least four times in the last few weeks. Re-reading those blogs inspired me to write this one. Far be it from me to dissuade readers to explore Europe simply because it is more expensive than it used to be. After all, some people have money to burn. Especially the person who is holding the … Continue reading
