Insurance Woes for Police Responders at Newtown

Once can only imagine how difficult it must have been for the police officers that responded to the tragedy that happened at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. Some are so affected by what they saw that they cannot work. Their insurance company is not covering the care they require. By now, you have undoubtedly heard about the tragedy that happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. A gunman (whose name we have all heard many times over), shot and killed 26 people at the school. Twenty of them were young children. The entire nation was shocked by, … Continue reading

The Best-Dressed Cops

And the winners are… Washington State Patrol troopers. And you thought fashion awards were reserved exclusively for the likes of Halle Berry and Julia Roberts. If you have ever been pulled over for speeding in “The Evergreen State” then you might not be surprised to learn that the state patrol there has just been named America’s “Best-Dressed State Law Enforcement Agency” by the National Association of Uniform Manufacturers and Distributors. Members of the state patrol don crisp black bow ties and blue “Smokey Bear” hats at the start of each shift. And according to the national trade group, the outfits … Continue reading

Calling The Fashion Police

The fashion police are coming to the rescue—of a distant cousin. Scotland Yard is getting a visit from the fashionably fit. In what some are calling a “historic moment” the iconic bobby’s uniform worn by members of the British police force is getting a makeover. According to the Metropolitan Police, the force has recruited students from the London College of Fashion, whose alumni includes celebrity shoemaker Jimmy Choo, to help redesign the uniform for the 21st century. For years police officers have complained that their foot-high helmets topple when they chase suspects. Proving that while the uniforms may be stylish … Continue reading

Suicide By Cop–The Death of An 18 Year Old.

Last week in the neighborhood my oldest children grew up, the police shot and killed and 18-year-old, high school football star. The police shot him four times in the back, after attempting to control him with bean bag shots. The young man turned to run back into his parent’s home, while holding a knife. The police were afraid this young man would hurt someone in the home. They had no choice but to protect his family. A few days later the 911 calls were released to the media. His mother had called at 4:00 a.m. and told the dispatch 911 … Continue reading

Line of Duty — Terri Blackstock

In keeping with the commemoration of September 11th, I have chosen to review books that in some way hearken back to the men and women who have made this country what it is today. This novel by Terri Blackstock, while it is last in the series I will be reviewing, was written to honor the men and women who served us during 9/11 and I think it’s very appropriate to review this book today. Taken from the acknowledgement: “As many of you know, I fully intended to end this series with Book 4, “Trial by Fire.” But on September 11, 2001, … Continue reading

Motorists Beware!

Get ready—they’re coming. It’s the end of the summer and police across the country are cracking down on motorists during what is anticipated to be one of the busiest travel periods the nation’s highways have ever seen. Naturally, officers are concerned with motorists’ speed, lack of seat belt use and reckless driving. But, over the next two weeks (which encompass the Labor Day weekend) deputies will be specifically cracking down on drunk drivers like never before. The new campaign is called, “Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.” The program’s goal is to prevent needless deaths and injuries. Each state … Continue reading

Calling *677 Could Save Your Life

There are so many things out there that we can teach our children that might save their lives, one of those is calling *677. If an unmarked car tries to pull you over on a deserted stretch of road call the number *677, it puts you in direct contact with police dispatch. For a woman alone in a car you should never pull over for an unmarked car. Police have to respect your right to keep going to a safe place. You do need to acknowledge them by putting on your hazard lights or you can call *677. The following … Continue reading
