Comfort Food for Cold Days

With all due respect to the residents of Florida, 39 degrees as a high temperature in January is a heat wave compared to the daytime high of 9 degrees that we suffered through today. I was born and raised in Hawaii, but now live in Wisconsin, so I understand that all things are relative in the weather department. I also know the power of a warm meal on a cold day… regardless of how you define “cold.” The following recipes are among my favorite “comfort foods.” They can take the biting sting out of an icy day with minimal prep … Continue reading

Autumn Recipes: P is for Pork

Pork Chops and applesauce. It’s classic comfort food that’s often served up this time of year when the apples are as crisp as the air. As we work our way through this culinary alphabet I am only too happy to turn the spotlight on one of my favorite meats—-pork. If you watch the Food Network then you know that you can’t discuss pig products without celebrity chef Paula Deen’s name coming up. Her recipe for Fried Pork Chops is extremely popular in my home. In fact, if you were to stick a wooden skewer in one of her plump and … Continue reading

Adding Pizzazz to Ordinary Pork

In a previous blog I hinted that the price of food has affected my menu planning and some of you noted that you are in the same boat. One reader commented that pork is a lot cheaper than chicken in his neck of the woods. I was surprised by the comment and today I did some comparison shopping at my local market. While I wouldn’t consider buying more pork based … Continue reading

Sweet Barbecue Pork Chops in the Crock Pot

Barbecue sauce seems to me to be a personal issue. There’s a dozen different ways to make it and each barbecue chef is convinced that his way is the right way. For our family, I make our barbecue sauce a little sweet with extra brown sugar to appeal to the taste buds of my kids. If you prefer a more savory sauce cut down on the brown sugar a little. And of course if you want more ‘kick’ to your sauce, add more chili powder, and a whole onion, finely chopped. It’s important to note that the “sauce” really is … Continue reading

Simple Pork Crockpot Dinners

There are two meals that I often fall back on when I know I’m not going to have time to cook, but still want to provide a decent dinner for my family. Sometimes the hours right before dinner are the busiest, carting kids around here and there, so I use my crock pot a lot, and these are husband and kids’ favorite pork dishes. It’s nice to have pork once in a while instead of our standard chicken or beef, and these dishes are no-brainers for me, because I don’t have to have a recipe. Both only have two ingredients … Continue reading
