Skyping the Prayer

Through my posts, I guess people will learn more about me and my family. We are a fun group. My Mom is a convert to the Mormon church, and my Dad’s family joined when he was around 8 years old. I have a lot of members of my family that are not LDS. I grew up in Texas. I’m proud of that fact. But, I married a good old Utah boy and have family spread out all across the United States. I have grown to love Utah myself. We just recently moved back after being away about 5 years, and … Continue reading

No, That’s Not Cottage Cheese In My Baby’s Mouth

I love when my daughter smiles, and I love making her laugh. She has yet to pop a tooth, and her gummy grins are almost too cute to take. It was during a smile-fest last week that my husband and I thought we noticed a little white spot on one of her gums. At first we thought it might be a tooth, but realized it was something else. My first thought was that it might be thrush, and we decided to keep a close eye on her mouth. Sure enough, a few days later, we noticed another white spot, this … Continue reading

Celebrity Updates: Miss Pepper-Sprayed Puerto Rico and Mama Katie

It appears Miss Puerto Rico was telling the truth after all. In a previous blog I reported that Miss Puerto Rico Universe, Ingrid Marie Rivera alleged that someone doused her pageant gown and swimsuit with pepper spray during the November 24th contest. Authorities opened an investigation and the news made headlines around the world. Rivera made the rounds on American TV recounting her horrific ordeal. She shared how she had to apply ice bags to her face and body in between turns onstage, and despite her excruciating pain she continued with the competition. Now police say the beauty queen did … Continue reading

Putting Family First

In many ways our families are one of the most important things that we work on in our lives. It is so important to take the time to teach our children the gospel and to make sure they feel loved and appreciated. There are so many things that pull at and distract us from our important calling of being a parent. It is important to take the time recognize and address the things that may be distracting you from your family. One of the biggest things could be your job. If you do not work, it could be your church … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Men Ought Always to Pray

Yesterday, we talked about the parable of the wicked judge. Today, I’d like to take a look at why that parable was told. Christ provides the reason in the first verse of Luke 18: “that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.” We need to make sure that our physical bodies do not keep us from spiritual experiences. As a new mother, I’ve struggled with this greatly over the last six weeks. My schedule has been somewhat disrupted, and I have let my prayers and scripture study slide. Things have been on the “when you think of it” … Continue reading

5 Advantages to a Christian School

The decision of how to school your child is a very personal one. Many parents feel that the public schools in their area are excellent and gladly send their children there. Other parents feel that homeschooling is the best option for their family. Whether they object to the material being taught in the public school, feel the quality of the school is inferior, or simply want to be with their children, home schooling is a wonderful blessing for many parents. If a parent is uncomfortable with the public school, but also lacks the time or the desire to homeschool, Christian … Continue reading

Trying to Rescue Disadvantaged Kids

Nancy and I had worked with disadvantaged young people who lived near our church for some time. We were determined to give at least some of them a chance to be successful. At best, it was always a “three steps forward, two steps back” proposition. Most of the kids lived in cramped apartments characterized by poor living conditions. Many of their parents had substance abuse problems and the kids had very little supervision. Crack dealers operated openly where they lived, no one seemed to care. The young people were quick to get angry and were always one smart remark away … Continue reading

5 Stages of Grief

Grief is a complicated process by which we eventually accept our loss and begin to heal and move on with our lives. If you have experienced the loss of your spouse, either through death or divorce, it’s hard to believe that you will ever get through it, but healing is part of loss, just like pain is. Here are the five stages of grief which everyone goes through for any kind of loss, be sure to remember that you may not experience these stages as linear. Sometimes you will experience denial for weeks, followed by bargaining; you see there is … Continue reading

My Day on the World Stage

In 1993 the opportunity arrived for me to shut up or put up. There was a woman by the name, or rather using the name, of Deborah Laake. She’d written a book called “Secret Ceremonies: Diary of a Mormon Wife” – a work of pure and sad delusion. This poor woman, if she told the complete truth, was at the mercy of a father who took unrighteous dominion to new levels. Whatever the perceived truth, she became extremely disenchanted with the church and proceeded to betray every covenant she’d half-heartedly made with the Lord. Where do I come in? Well, … Continue reading

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints View of Family

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has its own view of what a family is. This is described in a proclamation to the world that was issued by the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles in 1995. Here is what it said: We, THE FIRST PRESIDENCY of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children. IN THE PREMORTAL REALM, spirit … Continue reading
