Writers Strike Day 6—-Let the Firings Begin

Day 6 of the Writers Guild strike started with 102 members of “The Office” being fired. The hit NBC comedy shut down this week, and as a result, more than 100 below the line employees from grips and camera assistants to hairstylists and set dressers were given pink slips. In addition, the peacock network also informed the nonwriting staff of “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” that it would be laid off next Friday if the strike doesn’t end. And since Leno has already gone public refusing to cross the picket line, show producers are looking at alternative ways of … Continue reading

Look Who’s Crossing the Line

Writers Guild Strike—Day 5 She’s crossed the line in other instances so why should any of us be surprised that unlike Jay Leno, David Letterman, and Jon Stewart, Ellen DeGeneres has decided to cross the picket line and continue to film new episodes of her show. The actress turned talk show host explained her move on air yesterday: “I want to say I love my writers. I love them. In honor of them today, I’m not going to do a monologue,” DeGeneres told her live studio audience. “[But] people have traveled across the country. They’ve made plans. They’re here. I … Continue reading

Writers Strike Update: So Long to “The Office” and “24”

Can’t we all just get along? It’s Day 4 of the writers strike and the news doesn’t look good for TV fans. In addition to the shows I listed in my previous blog, producers say the writers strike has now claimed the Fox thriller “24.” Executives at Fox say they have removed the show from its midseason schedule. Producers say the show will return when it can air uninterrupted. Like most series written by members of the Writers Guild of America, “24” simply doesn’t have enough scripts to sustain a full season. Which means programming execs have had to do … Continue reading

Writers’ Strike Hits “Desperate Housewives”

Oh sure, now the truth comes out. Prior to writers actually hitting the picket line yesterday, producers of popular primetime TV shows such as “Desperate Housewives,” “Two and a Half Men,” and “CSI” maintained their series’ wouldn’t be sent into reruns until January. Fat chance. Turns out production has already stopped on at least six sitcoms because of the Hollywood writers’ strike. According to studio heads, my favorite show of the new season “Back to You,” starring Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton, will not return from a planned hiatus. Sniff. Sniff. Julia Louis-Dreyfus told TV’s “Entertainment Tonight” production has also … Continue reading

Writers’ Strike—It’s On

I’ve been blogging about this inevitable strike for days now and it’s finally underway. Which means if you live in New York City and are interested in meeting actress/producer/writer Tina Fey, she’s picketing outside of Rockefeller Center right now. Fey is a member of the Writers Guild of America East and has joined about 40 other writers outside the NBC building carrying signs and chanting, “”No contract, no shows!” I’m not sure the 30 Rock star is in the mood to sign autographs, but if you have ever wondered what she looked like in person now’s your chance. You can’t … Continue reading

Writers’ Strike Update

You’ll be watching a “Tonight Show” rerun on Monday if last-ditch talks don’t yield favorable results in the stalemate between film and TV writers and media companies. Right now picketers are preparing signs and strike sheets in New York and Los Angeles. However, according to news reports, both sides agreed to meet with a federal mediator on Sunday in a last-ditch effort to avoid an all out strike that would send thousands of writers to the picket line. But, given the current state of affairs (negotiations between the two parties began in July and were joined this week by a … Continue reading

Pre-Kindergarten Children on the Bus

As some of you know, my daughter began preschool this year. She is attending a pre-kindergarten program at a private Catholic School in the county in which I live. The private school has pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. While the preschool or pre-kindergarten class is in a separate building from the rest of the school, they still do many activities that the school children participate in. For example, they are included in fundraisers, eating in the cafeteria, computer lab, field trips, etc. My daughter only attends school two days a week. For a fall activity, the pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade … Continue reading

How A Writers’ Strike Could Affect Your Favorite TV Shows

For those of you who have better things to worry about… Talks between Hollywood writers and producers have stalled. Translation: Your favorite TV shows could be disappearing in the weeks to come if a settlement is not reached. According to leaders for the Writer’s Guild of America (WGA), a strike could happen as early as tomorrow if enough members decide NOT to work without a contract while a deal is being hammered out. WGA members’ contracts expired last night. Earlier in the day talks between the writers from your favorite television shows and show producers ended abruptly with both sides … Continue reading
