Sunday Student Preparation

Sunday morning, my Relief Society instructor announced somewhat sheepishly that she had prepared her lesson the night before. She then proceeded to read from the Teachings of the Presidents manual. I prepared myself for a long, boring lesson that I wouldn’t take much from. To my surprise, the class was great, and I wound up making more notes in my manual than I had by studying on my own. A big part of that was due to the fact that several other women in the class had read the lesson beforehand, and had sincere and thoughtful comments. Anyone who has … Continue reading

General Conference From the Past: Preparing the Way

As I studied the ministry of John the Baptist, I found a talk in the archives that touched on his life, his teachings, and his ministry. In April 1980, Elder Thomas S. Monson gave a talk entitled “Preparing the Way”. President Monson’s talk centered primarily on the Aaronic priesthood, which John held. This priesthood came to him by virtue of his lineage; like his father, Zacharias, he was able to administer in the ordinances thereof. This priesthood enabled him to baptize, both mortal men and the Savior of the world. Elder Monson discusses the fact that the power of the … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Prepare His Ways and Make His Paths Straight

The sometimes not-so-good thing about detailed scripture study is that you very rarely make it very far very fast. Today, after a good half hour of study, I finished the first three verses of Matthew 3, which make up part of next week’s lesson. The good thing, of course, is that I wound up pondering those three verses in full, and of course, part of that pondering included researching the scriptures given in the footnote. The surface of the verses seems very simplistic; John the Baptist began his mortal ministry, preaching that we must “Repent..: for the kingdom of Heaven … Continue reading

RS/EQ: The Time to Prepare to Meet God

Throughout eternity, the prophets have encouraged us to not procrastinate the day of our repentance. We ought not put off such an important thing; we ought not decide to wait until tomorrow when we could more easily accomplish our task today. As I studied Alma 34:30-41, as referenced in the lesson from President Kimball, I came again to recognize the importance of changing and improving our lives now, rather than later. You most likely remember this section. Alma and his brethren have come to preach to the Zoramites, who have broken off from the Nephites and perverted the ways of … Continue reading

Home Fire Safety: Are You Prepared?

A home fire could happen at anytime, anywhere. Some common fires at home occur because of a lit cigarette, unattended candles, Christmas trees, and simple things of that sort. It could also be a child playing with matches or a lighter, or even arson. There are a variety of events that can cause a fire in your home. The important thing is that you and your family are prepared. Not only will everyone feel safer, but you will be ready and know what to do should a fire take place. What you need: 1. Fire extinguishers on every floor, as … Continue reading
