Common Bedtime Complaints and How to Solve Them

Bedtime evokes feelings of frustration by many parents of preschoolers.  Some kids just hate going to bed at night.  They will say anything just to stay up one minute longer.  At first it may not seem like a big thing to allow a drink of water before bed but when it becomes a nightly habit it can wear on  your nerves.  Many times the pleas to stay up longer increase the more you give in to one last drink or one last bedtime story. Ways to Get Your Preschooler to Go to Bed and Stay in Bed “I’m still hungry.” … Continue reading

Preschoolers are People Too

Today I did job interviews. Luckily, I was the one interviewing instead of the one being interviewed. This was after an entire work day full of puppet shows for children. I came home rather cross-eyed with fatigue. The juxtaposition of interviewing young adults and creating plays for small children made me think. One of my colleagues is young enough to be someone I taught at the beginning of my career. Many of the people I interview these days are people whom I could easily have taught when they were very small children, and some of them I did teach. Sometimes … Continue reading

Focus on the Actions That You Wish To See

I went to another parenting seminar tonight, courtesy of our preschool. We had another fabulous speaker, and I wanted to share some of his focus with you. When your preschooler hits another child, or when your preschooler forgets to pick up her toys or tracks dirt through the house for the umpteenth time, what do you do? Grumble inwardly? Check. Grumble outwardly? Likely. Send your child for a time out or other form of discipline? Quite possibly. When your preschooler shares with another child, or when your preschooler is kind and shows concern over another child’s injury, what do you … Continue reading

Loving the Kid You Have

Dear preschooler, It’s just about a new year. It’s the time of year when people start to think about resolutions and reflect on the time that has gone by. At this time of year, I particularly remember the Christmas that you were one and a half, when you were getting six teeth at the same time. It was a drool-filled Christmas that involved very little sleep. I think that Santa and I crossed paths around 3 am that Christmas Eve, him heading up the chimney, me heading to the kitchen to get a drink of water, bouncing you into a … Continue reading

Caution: Preschooler Ahead

I was a big, big kid. In fact, I was such a tall child that at nine years old, a neighbor down the street told me that I was too big to be trick-or-treating at Halloween, and that I should be ashamed of myself. By age twelve, I was 5 foot 8 and the boys in my class looked up at me in horror during square dancing class (yes, they make you take square dancing class in Canada). By the time I was fourteen, I swore that if anyone asked me if I played basketball again, I would scream and … Continue reading

A Rather Mundane Life

Sometimes I am stunned by the absolutely mundane nature of my child-raising problems. Today it’s pull-ups. You see, due to the great wonders of elimination communication, my daughter has been using the toilet during the day time for ages. However, we have had no such success at night, and attempts to wake her to go to the bathroom have resulted in an irritable child, an irritable parent, and no success in the realm of night time toilet training. As a child, I had huge difficulties getting up to use the toilet at night, mostly due to an extreme fear of … Continue reading
