Farewell to Fairy Tales

Having worked in TV news for more than a decade I am used to seeing “Breaking News” alerts pop-up on my computer screen. However, yesterday’s bulletin, which read: “Disney shelves fairytale movies” made me realize that the term “Breaking News” is painfully overused, and in this case, inappropriate. Or is it? If you are the parent of a princess-in-training, you know, the kid, who lives in her Cinderella costume, insists on wearing her tiara – even in the shower – and refuses to believe that frogs aren’t really handsome princes in disguise, then the news is probably life-altering. In our … Continue reading

The Princess Question

To princess or not to princess isn’t the question. It is whether to push princesses on little girls that is really the question for me. In January, my daughter went to a princess birthday party. Before that she was not particularly interested in princesses. Sure, she owned frilly dresses. She would occasionally declare that she was a princess, but I don’t know that she really understood what that entailed, aside from a dress. After the party, she became moderately interested in princesses. That meant that she wore the frilly dresses more often and declared more frequently that she was a … Continue reading

Mirror, Mirror, On the Wall

I am beginning to suspect that I will soon need to embrace the idea of the princess. Recently, my daughter went to a princess birthday party and returned with a lot of princess-related material. She’s showing definite signs of princess-interest. Symptoms include twirling around in pretty dresses and loudly proclaiming, “Look at me! I am a princess!” Now, at the moment I don’t think that my preschooler has any clue what a princess is. The idea of royalty is completely foreign to her. I haven’t explained royal succession or government structures, nor have we even read books or movies that … Continue reading

Dressing A Daughter’s Room 5

When we last left off, I was talking about the great fabrics that I poked through at an Amish-owned fabric shop in Lancaster, Pa. I was looking for the perfect fabric for my little girl’s room. I wanted something that was current, fresh, fun and would grow with my daughter as she did. To remind you, the fabric choices were: a delicate variegated pink rose pattern, pink outlined flowers on a white background and its opposite white outlines flowers on a pink background, a thin candy strip with two different pink stripes and a white stripe, and an an oddball, … Continue reading

Dressing a Daughter’s Room 2

Are you ready for the next step in dressing up my daughter’s room? Previously, I talked about the elements of my daughter’s room and what we have done so far, such as the colors and the furniture. Now, I’ll talk about how we went about choosing custom curtains to dress both her windows and the closet door. if you missed the previous post in this series, just click here: Dressing a Daughter’s Room So, now we are ready to move on to picking out the curtains. The first thing we did, of course, was to take measurements of the windows … Continue reading

Dressing a Daughter’s Room

We had quite an adventure this past weekend. Now that Molly’s room is almost finished, we just need to address the windows, or should I say “dress” the windows. We also have a closet door to dress as well. Here is what we have been doing and where we found a way to make custom curtains when I don’t yet sew. Getting Molly’s room ready has been a long process that was frequently interrupted by other house projects that took priority, such as new flooring in the family room, felling trees in the yard, and fixing plumbing leaks. We can … Continue reading

Enchanted (2007)

I love a good fairy tale and I love a good spoof, so when the movie “Enchanted” came out, I knew I’d enjoy it. However, I didn’t get to see it until this last weekend. Why, oh why, did I wait? I loved it! We begin our film in an animated land called Anadalasia. It’s ruled by Queen Narissa, an evil woman who can’t stand the thought of anyone taking over her throne. We also meet Giselle, a lovely young woman who talks to animals and never loses her temper. One day, she meets Prince Edward, and after singing a … Continue reading

Why Don’t Our Mice Do That?

Something strange has been happening in our home lately since we brought home the Disney movie Enchanted. I won’t give you any of the details of the movie. You can check with the Media Blog for that, but suffice it to say that we are looking at our home in a new light. The whole family is singing and dancing around the house, humming happy working songs and expecting the local wildlife to come and help us with our dishes. But, since I just spent most of my day preparing turkey pot pies and cleaning up the kitchen, I am … Continue reading

A Fairy Princess Room from Junk Mail

In my little world of frugal living, it is all about using what we have instead of buying new. Of course, this can backfire, as in The Paper Conspiracy. But once it a while a little bit of inspiration makes it all come together. As you may know from reading earlier blogs, we are working on fixing up my daughter’s room in a princess theme. It has been slow going, since other things around the house keep breaking, taking our attention away from our little girl’s room. But we are almost there. The walls are repaired and painted, at least. … Continue reading

A Frugal Room Fit for a Princess

From tots to teens, kids appreciate having their own space that is uniquely theirs. You don’t have to spend a lot to create a great space. Here are two ideas that will work for any age, just by varying the colors and patterns. And, you may even wind up stealing these ideas to use in your own office or kitchen. We are in the middle of painting and decorating a room for our daughter. The basics are almost done, and now it is time for the furniture to be moved in and the accessories to be added. Our little princess … Continue reading
