Procrastinators, Read This Later

Some of us procrastinate some of the time, and some of us procrastinate much of the time. I have not met many people who never ever procrastinate, but I suppose that they may exist somewhere. Sometimes there is a reason behind why we drag our feet, such as not liking the task that you are supposed to do. Sometimes, though, procrastination happens for no reason at all. For example, you suddenly find yourself doing something instead of what you know you should be doing yet you cannot come up with any reason why. The other day I realized that I … Continue reading

Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (2)

In the previous article on this disorder (see link below) we looked at the story of Terry, an intelligent postgrad student whose career had stalled and marriage was failing due to the presence of obsessive–compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). As explained in the previous article, OCPD is unrelated to the more well-known obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) which commonly involves behaviors driven by obsessive thoughts, such as repeated hand washing and checking of locks on doors and windows. Today we look at the case of Shaun who possesses many of the characteristics of Terry. His preoccupation with his job and the minute details … Continue reading

General Conference: “This Day”

In his talk “This Day” Elder Henry B Eyring speaks about the importance of avoiding procrastination. He opens by speaking of the danger of the “Someday” mindset, because your time may run out and you will not have accomplished the many things that you meant to do someday. Elder Eyring then stresses the importance of serving the Lord each day. He points out that service to the Lord helps you to draw closer to Him. Elder Eyring encourages each of us to begin the day with a prayer to ask the Lord where you can serve today. Elder Eyring says: … Continue reading

Be on the Look Out for Distractions

When I think of distractions in the world of the single parent, I think of things that we do or choices we make (or our children make) to keep from focusing on what we really need to focus on. Similar to denial, as humans we have a great ability to create distractions for ourselves whenever we are faced with something unknown, unpleasant, or just plain hard. As single parents, and for single parent families, we may have gone through such tough times or be in the midst of a crisis and in an attempt to find relief, we get caught … Continue reading

The Curse of Inertia

What’s inertia, you say? An object a rest tends to stay at rest. An object in motion tends to stay in motion. That, more or less, is inertia. I have a hard time with inertia some days. Inertia makes me not want to leave the house. Inertia makes me turn down invitations from friends. Those days, I am an object at rest and I want to stay at rest. Today I fought off inertia to go have lunch with some friends at a pretty park in Portland. I really wanted to stay home. The morning was off to a bad … Continue reading

Are You Working Too Fast?

We have talked about procrastination and how some of us wrestle with putting things off and trying to find the time to get things done in our home businesses, but we have not really talked about the fact that some people have just the opposite problem—they have a tendency to rush through things and try to get too much done. For those of us who actually work too fast, we can run into business difficulties when we are speeding through our tasks and contacts. The problem with working too fast is that details can get overlooked, mistakes can get made, … Continue reading

Now or Later?

If you have kids who procrastinate, here’s a technique that might help. It’s called The Now or Later Technique. Dr. Jerry Day describes it and like his behavior shaping technique mentioned in a previous blog, this is one of those techniques that you shouldn’t try unless you can see it through to the end. There’s a good chance you will be inconvenienced initially but if you are persistent, you probably won’t have to do it again. Let’s look at a child who procrastinates when it comes to cleaning his room. The first step is to give your child a directive, … Continue reading

The Fitness Blog Week in Revew for Jan 20 – 26

What a week it’s been. I battled a cold for three days of it with a relatively high fever that kept me laid up and not performing at my peak. It was also a week that my daughter explored her interest in Hoops for Hearts, we went roller skating and I discovered that while I still remember how, mentally, physically, my body is complaining about the motions and the skating. Still, I have to say that overall – it’s been a great week. This is also our last week in review for the month of January. Check back here in … Continue reading
