Pre-K Proms are a Thing Now

It is no longer unusual for schools to hold a kindergarten, or pre-kindergarten, graduation. Some feel that this small ceremony encourages children to believe that they can and will graduate from high school. The newest trend is for schools to hold “Pre-K proms”. Understandably, parents have mixed feelings about this. A prom is usually something that is for high school students. Teenagers (or their parents) spend a lot of money on tickets to the prom, the nice clothing the teen will wear to the prom, and perhaps some extras like dinner at a fancy restaurant or a limo to get … Continue reading

Controversial Dress Ban

Prom is not cheap.  Dressing for prom will drain your wallet even more. So, what happens when you find an affordable prom gown that flatters your figure, but you can’t wear it to the big dance because of a new school dress code? That’s the dilemma facing eighth grade girls at Readington Middle School in New Jersey.  The school principal recently decided to ban strapless dresses from the year-end dinner dance, but did so after some parents had already forked over a pretty penny for their daughters’ fancy shoulder-baring frocks. Dozens of moms and dads are now taking to social … Continue reading

Upcoming Disney Flicks

Because it’s the first month of the year I thought I’d take a look at some of Disney’s upcoming movies for 2011. I’m going to skip over highly anticipated films like the fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Cars 2,” because I’ve posted about them before, and more general knowledge is known about them. Instead, I want to feature lower-key Disney movies, ones that are perhaps more bubbly fare than blockbuster bait, but should be enjoyable nonetheless. At the moment Disney’s got three such movies announced: “Prom,” “Mars Needs Moms,” and “Winnie the Pooh.” The first, “Prom,” is a blend … Continue reading

High School Prom

My wife and I were chaperones for high school prom this year and we weren’t going to deprive our son of the experience. Weeks earlier my wife had picked out a baby-sized tuxedo for our little gentleman-in-training and we were finally going to see how he would look in it. Following every other experience I’ve had with my son, he looked better than I did. While both of us were wearing tuxedo’s Mommy had purchased a slick and shiny black dress to reveal her newly trimmed physique after lots of exercise. She looked like she could single-handedly solve the national … Continue reading

Prom or Porn

I will never forget the dress I wore to my senior prom. It was an oh-so 80s frock, which featured a crushed black velvet side-draped bodice and off-the-shoulder neckline, paired with an iridescent blue tea-length bottom with asymmetrical hem. I think I was channeling Laney in She’s All That… a decade ahead of time. The dress was far from revealing. Save for my semi-bare shoulders (I wore a wrap) and a hint of my pantyhose-covered ankles and shins, I was pretty much covered from head to toe. Compared to what girls are wearing to prom these days, my dress was … Continue reading

Teens Are Getting Frugal

Being frugal is a good thing, no matter what your age. But teens can have a hard time of it, just because of all of the peer pressure to fit in, be cool and have the best “stuff.” With sweet 16 parties costing more than weddings, and celebrity idols sporting seasonal accessories that cost more than a small house, it can be hard for a teen to save money. Teen spending is usually the last to go in a tough economy. Teens have more disposable income, thanks to money given by parents and part time jobs that yield income without … Continue reading

The Prom—Part Four—Wrapping Up

Well, we survived the prom—of course, just one more of those milestones in family life that come and go in a flurry of anticipation and effort. Judging from the digital pictures and the exhausted teenagers, it looks as though all the effort and energy was worth it and it was a good, memorable time, at least for my daughter and her friends. Yesterday afternoon as we were downloading the photos from the camera—included the “before” photos of my daughter and her friend in sweats and curlers, the “process” pictures as we came up with hair dos and I stood in … Continue reading

The Prom–Part Three–Staging

After three plus weeks of fuss and planning, tonight is the night. The prom has finally arrived. We’ve had dress drama and date drama and all sorts of drama in between. I’ve got the alterations made and today is dedicated to pedicures and manicures and hair dos. Somehow, our house has become the “staging area” and I will not be the only parent sitting here tonight with camera and hair spray in hand. Would it be cold-hearted and un-motherly of me to admit that I’m looking forward to having this year’s prom be over? I really can’t complain–my daughter has … Continue reading

The Prom—Part Two (The “Date” Changed)

One thing that parenthood has taught me is to expect the unexpected. Just because I think I’ve seen it all, does not mean I have. In fact, as soon as I get a little cocky about how seasoned I am as a veteran parent, life hands me some amazing little surprises. Some of these surprises are anything but fun, but others add a little sparkle to my life. I’ve written before about my eldest daughter’s prom this spring. This is our first prom so I am into commemorating the adventure. I found out yesterday, however, that there have been some … Continue reading

The Prom—Part One

I have to warn you all that this probably won’t be my last and only blog posting about “the prom”—my eldest daughter has just informed me that she will be going to her Junior-Senior Prom this year (she’s a Junior), and this ANOTHER new development/milestone for us. See, I say “us” as though I am going to the prom too, when in fact, I’m really more like the stage manager and prop master. In reality, I’m actually a little confused about exactly what I am supposed to do now that “we” are going to next month’s prom… Now, my daughter … Continue reading
