The Martyrdom of Joseph Smith

One hundred and sixty-three years ago today, Joseph Smith and his brother, Hyrum, were shot and killed in jail in Carthage Jail at Carthage, Illinois. Willard Richards and future prophet John Taylor were with them. Taylor was wounded, while Richards escaped harm. I cannot express in adequate words the events of that day, and so I will not try. I will, however, provide you with a link to an Ensign article describing what happened. One of the things I most struggled with when I joined the church was my testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Indeed, I was baptized without … Continue reading

LDS General Conference Scripture Citation Index

Have you ever wondered what the modern church leaders have said about a particular scripture verse or story? Now you have no reason to be curious. Two BYU faculty members, Richard C. Galbraith and Stephen W. Liddle, have created an online citation database that links scriptures to Conference talks. This web site can further enhance your daily scripture study, or help you prepare for lessons or talks. Galbraith and Liddle brought their site online a few years ago and have been working constantly to improve it. Rather than searching for a General Conference talk by subject, you can click on … Continue reading

Home & Visiting Teaching Lessons

You know you’ve been guilty of it – picking out a talk that stuck in your mind and teaching it to all of your families. But just because it resonated with you doesn’t mean it was what the folks you teach needed to hear. Since the May home and visiting teaching messages come from April General Conference talks, how can you best select and teach the lesson suited to your families? If you are really on the ball, you were able to attend all four (or five) sessions of Conference. You may even have been able to hear them all! … Continue reading

Did You Miss Conference?

Yesterday, we talked about some great steps towards growing from General Conference. However, what if you were unable to attend all four (or five, if you are a priesthood holder) sessions? This is one of those things that I love about the world we live in today – technology. In fact, some of this technology enabled me to keep my three kids (all under the age of six) from terrorizing everyone else during Conference this weekend. There are so many ways that we can listen to Conference today. Audio archives of General Conference are already available on MP3. For more … Continue reading

First Presidency Message: Inspirational Thoughts from President Hinckley

This month’s First Presidency message was available online yesterday, February first. I encourage you to head over and look at it. And if looking is too difficult, the church has allowed us the option of listening to both the home and visiting teaching message. Since the layout of the website has changed, I’ll let you know that both messages are in the upper lefthand corner, under the picture of President Hinckley. President Hinckley, by the way, prepared the home teaching message for the month. Rather than a full-length article, it is a combination of inspirational thoughts taken from various addresses … Continue reading

RS/EQ: The Life and Ministry of Spencer W. Kimball

Next week, we’ll be starting the new manual for the Teachings of the Presidents of the Church. I, personally, am very excited, as I really love this year’s prophet, President Spencer W. Kimball. Although President Hinckley has been the prophet for the entire time I have been a member of the church, I read The Miracle of Forgiveness early in my membership and found it quite inspiring. Since then, I have read and reread it on a frequent basis. I love President Kimball’s up-front, straight-forward way of speaking, and have a strong testimony that he was called as a prophet … Continue reading

Fall General Conference

It is that time of year again. General Conference is taking place September 30, 2006 and October 1, 2006. This is a wonderful time to listen to the message of the prophet. It is also a great time to take account of what you have accomplished during the year. It is time to make preparations for your family to watch or listen to conference. Conference is available as a public service through many cable companies throughout the country. You may want to call your local cable company to see if they offer this service. If you live in Utah you … Continue reading

The Divinity of Jesus Christ

With the advent of many books into the market, such as The DaVinci Code (which I enjoyed), The Last Templar (which I mostly enjoyed) and on and on and on, the divinity of Christ has been called into question so much that some Christian sects are backing off, they are now saying that Jesus Christ is not God. I am deeply saddened by this. Our Lord and Savior condescended to come to this earth as a mortal babe. He grew into adulthood with parents that loved and accepted Him and brothers who struggled with that same knowledge. At thirty years … Continue reading

Joseph Smith: Prophet, Seer and Revelator

So much controversy swirls around one of the greatest men, save Jesus Christ, to grace this planet. For a man so humble, he was purported to have created a religion to fulfill his own greed and lascivious desires. In truth, he was a humble boy who sought truth. Just as the Fall had to occur, so too, did the Restoration. For at the meridian of time, our Lord and Savior came to this earth and paid for the sins, sorrows, grief and illnesses for all of the children of God. He paid the price so that man would have hope. … Continue reading
