General Conference Recap

General Conference was this past weekend. It was wonderful to be able to hear the words of President Monson and the other apostles for so many sessions this weekend. The talks were wonderful and very uplifting. Many spoke poignantly about the troublesome times that we are facing around the world. The ultimate message was one of hope and faith. President Monson spoke about having faith during difficult times. He shared three stories of people who faced enormous trials, but were able to persevere because of the strength of their faith. The line that stood out to me from that talk … Continue reading

First Presidency Message: Heeding the Voice of the Prophets

Our First Presidency Message for the month of July comes to us from Dieter F. Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency. He reminds us that ours is a worldwide church, with members in nearly every nation, and that we all are children of our Heavenly Father, who shows us His love in part by providing us with living prophets. We have had an unbroken succession of prophets from Joseph Smith down to our present day, as we’ve recently seen with the passing of Gordon B. Hinckley and the sustaining of Thomas S. Monson. There is always a president at … Continue reading

Gospel Questions—Why Do We Have the Doctrine and Covenants?

My nonmember friend asked me: Why does every Prophet change or add to the rules? I thought everything I needed to know was in the Bible and the Book of Mormon, but then I found out about the Doctrine and Covenants. That’s a BIG book of additional teachings. One of the things I love so much about the Gospel is the fact that we have a prophet living on the earth today. This means we are privileged to have continuing revelation. I’m reminded of the scripture in 1 Corinthians 3:2 which reads: “I have fed you with milk and not … Continue reading

An Example of Provident Living

There was a family in the ward I grew up in that was almost entirely self-sufficient. Looking back as I a child I did not realize how impressive this was. In fact I thought it was strange that they gardened so much. They were a large family, the mom stayed home and the dad worked for the post office. They needed to make the best of the resources that they had. They truly embraced provident living. They grew almost all of their fruits and vegetables. Their garden was at least half an acre. I grew up in Utah, so it … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: Modern Day Prophets

This family home evening lesson is based loosely on the conference talk “Prophets—Pioneer and Modern Day” by Elder Earl C Tingey. The talk focuses on the many blessings that the church received while President Brigham Young and President Gordon B Hinckley were prophets of the church. This topic can be as broad or as narrow as you wish. You can easily include all of the prophets in the talk or focus specifically on President Gordon B Hinckley. You can open the family home evening lesson by reading Doctrine and Covenants 1:38. You can talk about what that scripture means. It … Continue reading

General Conference: “Prophets–Pioneer and Modern Day”

In his talk “Prophets—Pioneer and Modern Day” Elder Earl C Tingey talks about Brigham Young and President Gordon B Hinckley. He lists their accomplishments as well as comparing them to each other. The talk focuses on how the Lord blesses his prophets and the people of the church. Elder Tingey begins by speaking about Brigham Young. He lists several accomplishments of Brigham Young. One of which was taking the saints across the plains and helping them build a prosperous city from practically nothing. President Young went on to organize 400 more colonies throughout the West. Elder Tingey speaks of some … Continue reading

Prophets

I am so grateful to have a prophet leading and guiding the church today. It is reassuring to me that the church is led by a prophet who follows the counsel given to him by Christ. Since I grew up as a member of the church, I didn’t realize this unique quality until I was in high school or college. I remember the day in high school when I gained a testimony of the prophet Joseph Smith. I was in seminary and we were discussing some of the trials that Joseph faced while in Liberty Jail. As the class and … Continue reading

General Conference: “Prophets in the Land”

In his talk “Prophets in the Land” Elder Jeffrey R Holland speaks about the importance of listening to the prophets during General Conference. He begins by telling the story of Carolyn Rasmus. She began teaching at BYU, one Saturday she went hiking with colleagues from the school. She was surprised when they stopped to listen to conference. She did not realize that there were prophets on the earth. After listening to conference she began to investigate the church and finally joined. Elder Holland says that General Conferences declare three things to the world. He says: “First, they declare eagerly and … Continue reading

O Blessed Woman

As the brethren have stated, “Women, in partnership with God bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man” (Moses 1:39), ushering children into the world in a rush of excruciating pain, happiness and overwhelming love. In partnership with their husbands, they do their part in the plan of salvation by giving birth to, raising, nurturing and teaching these children, to simply raise them up unto God. Without faithful women of God, children will be tossed to and fro by the winds of change as the world inundates families with a barrage of attractively wrapped danger. “To you women, … Continue reading

A Review of Prophets, Priests and Kings by Andrew C. Skinner

I’m a closet theologian. What does that mean? I devour the scriptures. I devour the books by the brethren as well as a few select theologians, Andrew C. Skinner being one of them. There is nothing I love more than learning new things about the gospel and diving into the scriptures and words of the brethren to delve further into that new knowledge. For me it is a grand treasure hunt, one that ends in the ultimate prize. On to Prophets, Priests and Kings by Br. Skinner. Did you know that Melchizedek, the man the higher priesthood is named after … Continue reading
