Picking Pumpkins At A Pumpkin Patch

This week we took our annual trip to the pumpkin patch. There are several in our area but our favorite is a family owned farm. When you arrive you hop on a hay wagon pulled by a tractor. They ask what size of pumpkins you are looking for, my son wanted a big one, then take you to the right area. We walked through the fields in and around vines. My son was quite picky. This one wasn’t round enough. That one wasn’t orange enough. Then he found the perfect one. Round, orange, big enough to be cool, and small … Continue reading

Styrofoam Ball Pumpkins

You can use any size Styrofoam balls for this project, and if you mix and match different sizes, that’s even better. You will also need some orange and green construction paper, black if you want to cut out eyes and stuff, scissors, glue, and some straight pins. You will need an adult to help you get started. Grown ups: hold the Styrofoam ball securely over a padded surface. Poke a hole through the center of the ball with an ice pick (a screwdriver will work too). While the grown ups are getting things ready, begin cutting narrow strips of orange … Continue reading

Make Pumpkin Pals!

Okay, so you’re not big on breaking out the butcher knife to carve a pumpkin and you don’t feel like dealing the messy insides. Who can blame you? This is especially true if your kids are really little. Still, you want them to have fun and enjoy some holiday decorating. Just make pumpkin pals instead of regular jack-o-lanterns. Instead of carving pumpkins, pick up some in different sizes. Let your kids draw faces with indelible marker or paint pens, or paint on faces with washable craft paint. It might still get a little messy, but if you spread out some … Continue reading

Fall Decorating Ideas: Outdoor Décor

While nature does a beautiful job of decorating for fall with changing leaves in gorgeous colors, there are a few natural touches you can add to really dress your home up for autumn. Porches and Stairs Add large pumpkins and other gourds or squashes and create an arrangement in the corner of your porch. For smaller porches, planters in fall colors may be more convenient. Surround the planter with pumpkins or try a basket filled with different sized pumpkins and gourds with some raffia as filler. For the stairs (if your stairway is wide enough to avoid trips and falls) … Continue reading

Fun Fall Games With Pumpkins

Fall is coming and with it the pumpkin harvest. So here are a few fun games that you can play using pumpkins. They are best played outside, especially if a pumpkin happens to crack. Each game uses pumpkins of course and items like baskets or hula-hoops. All of the games can be played by children of all ages, although for some of the games you might want to separate into younger and older children and have two races. Pumpkin Seed Toss Place some baskets at different distances. Assign each basket a number score on a piece of paper and attach … Continue reading
