Roger Ebert On The Road To Recovery

Good news for fans of Roger Ebert. According to news reports, the 64-year-old film critic plans to attend his annual festival for overlooked movies this month. The outing will be his public appearance since undergoing cancer surgery. I have reported on Ebert’s medical progress in previous blogs, but this is by far the biggest piece of news (good news) that has been released since he had surgery last June to remove a cancerous growth on his salivary gland. That surgery was followed by an emergency procedure he underwent in July after a blood vessel burst near the site of the … Continue reading

Dear Heather … Exercise & Addiction

Dear Heather, My son has struggled with drug use over the last two years and while we have tried to get him into rehabilitation programs before and more to help him to quit, we’ve not been successful. Recently after running away and getting hooked again, he came home and said that he’s done with drugs for good. He’s been exercising regularly, running four and five miles a day. At first, I wasn’t sure if he really was doing it and I hate to admit it, but I’ve followed him and so has his father on many occasions and he’s doing … Continue reading

Day 11: Falling off the Horse

You know, I knew it was a mistake somewhere in the back of my head when I just let myself off the hook for that slip on Day 7. So that one cigarette wasn’t satisfying, I slipped again on the 8th and on the 9th day, I smoked 5 cigarettes during the day. Yesterday, which was day 10, I sat down to re-evaluate my plan for quitting and realized that because I kept saying they didn’t matter, I was still smoking them without paying attention to them. New Beginnings So I guess today is a day of second verse, same … Continue reading

Day 5: My Throat Hurts and My Sinuses Hate Me

But I am doing moderately well in the cravings department. I saw someone having a cigarette last night and I didn’t want it. That actually surprised me – and what surprised me even more was that I didn’t feel the urge to light up and it never came the whole time I was standing there. Now I’ll grant you, at one point yesterday, I looked at my husband and I said – “Well, I’m not dying for a cigarette.” And he said, “Nope, you’re just dying.” He wasn’t far wrong. I was so congested yesterday I felt like I had … Continue reading

Celebrity News—The Good and The Funny

After a week filled with the obligatory wretched news from Hollywood (divorces, restraining orders, accusations of adultery, etc.)—finally, some good news. In a letter published in the Chicago Sun-Times, Roger Ebert announced that he is on the mend and hopes to be fully recovered in time for the Academy Awards and the Cannes Film Festival. The Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic and co-host of the “Ebert & Roeper” TV show says he’s looking forward to getting back to work full time early next year. “One thing I’ve discovered is that I love my job more than I thought I did, and … Continue reading
