Fitness Journal – Welcome Back from the Weekend

Welcome back to my personal fitness journal and I hope you had a great weekend. One of my primary goals is to demonstrate how you can incorporate fitness into your every day lifestyle whether you have kids, you work out of your house or you work in an office. You can do it whether you are male or female, married or single – all you need is the will to find the way that works for you. I’ve discovered over the last couple of years that while working with a personal trainer was a powerful motivator for me, I had … Continue reading

Getting Over a Break Up

The first few days after a breakup are the worst and breakups themselves are terrible. The best way to start on the path of recovery is to focus on you, yourself and you. Don’t dwell on the person who’s not there anymore, instead allow yourself to be a bit selfish and self-centered. Do what makes you happy. If you like romantic comedies, go see them, if you like sports, go play them, if you saw some new shoes that you really liked and you can afford them, go for it. The first few weeks after a breakup are about you, … Continue reading

Oy, I Overdid It – Recovering from Surgery

Let me tell you, the most frustrating part of having had surgery is that as an active person it’s very difficult to sit around and do nothing. So, while I am smart enough to follow my doctor’s instructions, I’m also stubborn enough to push the envelope and today – I overdid it. 15 Minutes of Effort Currently, 15 minutes of physical effort leaves me weak and exhausted. If I take a shower for fifteen minutes, I take a 2-hour nap right afterwards. When I go for my designated 15-minute walk, well that’s another 2 hours I need to spend napping. … Continue reading

WHEW! It’s Benign, Can I Describe My Relief?

My doctor just called, they got the pathology back on the biopsy they performed on the tissue removed when they removed my ovary and fallopian tube. It’s all 100% benign. I feel like a tremendous weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I didn’t realize just how much I was stressing over this until he called. There is a history of uterine cancer in my family and when they said the mass was so bad they had to remove the ovary in its entirety – well, yes I grew afraid. But It’s Benign It’s benign which means it’s not cancer … Continue reading

Well, Here I Am Again …

Good morning, it feels strange to be sitting down and typing. I know it’s only been a few days since I was last here posting my thoughts, my workouts, my research and more, but it’s been a very long few days for me. For those of you who read my blogs regularly, you know that I was scheduled for surgery just three days ago. The surgery was exploratory in nature, designed to go in and examine the mass they found on my right ovary. The last few weeks had given me plenty of time to think ahead to the surgery … Continue reading

17 Years After Tragedy Strikes: Moving On

This is the conclusion on a 3 part series. To visit part 1 click here, to visit part 2 click here. So why was it after almost 17 years I lay awake grieving and feeling guilty about my friend Joy’s accident? I have hit a point in my life where there is a tremendous amount of contentment. I have a wonderful husband who is a great provider, two beautiful boys who’ve fulfilled my dreams of being a mother, a nice home, the coolest dog… I feel humbled and undeserving of such goodness. Joy will be turning twenty-nine this year and … Continue reading

The Watermelon Cat and Mr. Bones

When the boys first arrived in our home, to describe them as traumatized would be an understatement. They were ages twelve and nine at the time. The boys had been placed in a shelter by CPS (Children’s Protective Service) after being removed from their mother’s care. She was drug addicted and jobless. They had no permanent home and moved from place to place every few weeks. The boys had experienced hunger, deplorable living conditions, exposure to a criminal element, and left most of the time to fend for themselves. They both had an assortment of physical and emotional issues. By … Continue reading

It’s Hard Not To Hover

When your spouse has been gravely ill or injured, it can be hard not to hover over them as they are recovering. After all, it’s an eye opening experience to realize that you could lose them and it could be that unexpected and surprising. Appendicitis is easily corrected through an appendectomy, but in the hours and sometimes days it can take to recognize what it is can make those hours and days some of the longest you have ever spent. It’s hard to take a step back when they come home. It’s been hard for me. For my daughter it’s … Continue reading

Day 6: Smokeless & Going Strong

Yesterday, my daughter I went to the grocery store to get bread and she looked at me and said Mommy, don’t you need to buy cigarettes? I said, nope – I haven’t smoked in five days. She grinned at me and announced “Your heart is going to be happier now, Mommy and so is mine.” Yes, that was my aw shucks moment. Apparently, my five year old saw a video in her physical education class about the need for great cardiovascular health and what can hurt your heart health. After watching it and knowing I smoked, it upset her to … Continue reading
