Genealogy Resume

I have recently been putting together a genealogy resume for two reasons. Number one, I have decided to take my genealogy hobby professionally-much thanks to this blogging job for showing me how great it can be to get paid for what you really love. And number two, in order to allow me to reflect on my own personal strengths and weaknesses in regards to my genealogical experience and know-how. My completed genealogy resume will include all aspects of my genealogy “addiction” (for lack of a more appropriate word). I will include my reasons for doing genealogy, any education I have … Continue reading

What Are Hard and Soft Skills?

We all have both hard and soft skills within us, which are a part of our personality and emotional make-up. The question is: how can we use them when we are looking for a job? How can we make them more marketable, or can we? First, we should define what they are. Hard skills are specific and can be easily taught, such as being able to read or type a letter. They represent the minimum skills necessary to do a job and are the first screen employers use to weed out applicants who are obviously not qualified for the position … Continue reading

Are Resume Writing Services Necessary?

When I was looking for a job a while back, I realized my resume would not suffice. It had been several years since I had applied for work, having been at home raising children. I knew a revamp was in order, only I wasn’t sure where to start. I began looking for websites with resume resources and information, and I kept running into the same problem. Most websites I came across gave only vague information while promoting their resume writing services. Are resume writing services necessary? After all, if your spelling, grammar, and punctuation are not up to par, it … Continue reading

Job Interview Tips

The job interview offers you what may be your first and only chance to make a great impression on a prospective employer. 1. Start by being punctual. It is wise to arrive just a few minutes early. Too early isn’t good either, but late says you don’t care too much about the job, about the interviewer’s time, or about being on time for work should you be hired. 2. Dress impeccably. Don’t overdo it with flashy colors, too much jewelry, or overly expensive attire, but dress smart and stylishly. Pay attention to detail. Take the time to press your shirt … Continue reading

More Resume Tips

Write your resume with confidence and present it in a professional manner. If you are asked to mail it in rather than bringing it in person, make sure it is addressed neatly and includes the correct amount of postage. Also, make sure you have addressed it to the attention of the appropriate person. 1. When preparing your resume, offer the most relevant information to the job you are seeking. For example, if you are applying for an office job, put down education and experience that shows you are capable of performing office duties. You don’t need to state that you … Continue reading

Resume References

This part of the resume is important, so make sure that you don’t skip this step. First of all, you need to decide who to use as your references. Take a moment and brainstorm all of the people who would have good things to say about your character or work performance. Don’t forget to include teachers, religious leaders, mentors, coworkers and friends. The one group of people that you should avoid, though, is relatives. Using a relative as a reference hurts your credibility. The general belief is that you relatives will have good things to say about you, whether they … Continue reading
