First Presidency Message: Heeding the Voice of the Prophets

Our First Presidency Message for the month of July comes to us from Dieter F. Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency. He reminds us that ours is a worldwide church, with members in nearly every nation, and that we all are children of our Heavenly Father, who shows us His love in part by providing us with living prophets. We have had an unbroken succession of prophets from Joseph Smith down to our present day, as we’ve recently seen with the passing of Gordon B. Hinckley and the sustaining of Thomas S. Monson. There is always a president at … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Gifts of the Spirit

The ninth lesson in the Joseph Smith manual is entitled, “Gifts of the Spirit.” The lessons begins by pointing out that Joseph was an unlearned man and was not gifted with languages, and yet he was able to translate the Book of Mormon. This was a gift of the Spirit he was given to help fulfill his mission on this earth, and similarly, we have all been given gifts to aid us, as well. The seventh Article of Faith states: “We believe in the gifts of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.” The manual adds, … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Revelation – A Continuous Melody and a Thunderous Appeal

This week’s lesson from the Spencer W. Kimball manual was entitled “Revelation – A Continuous Melody and a Thunderous Appeal” and is lesson twenty-two. In this portion of the book, we read about a press conference held at the Arizona temple visitors’ center. A reporter asked him if God truly did speak to him. President Kimball was quick to answer that yes, indeed, he did speak to God as His prophet. No hesitation on his part whatsoever – he bore his testimony of continuing revelation. He says, “The blessing of revelation is one that all should seek for.” There are … Continue reading

RS/EQ: “Prayer, the Passport to Spiritual Power”

One of my favorite lessons from the Spencer W. Kimball manual this year was “Prayer, the Passport to Spiritual Power.” He states: “I always have very tender feelings about prayers and the power and blessings of prayer.” He then relates the story of a time he visited New Zealand and fell ill. He was scheduled to speak at a conference, but worried that he would have to cancel. At nearly seven o’clock, he arose from his bed, got dressed, and hurried to the place where the meeting was to be held. He entered the arena to the sound of applause … Continue reading

General Conference From the Past: Mother, Catch the Vision of Your Call

I know we talked about moms last week as we studied a past Conference talk, but between the upcoming Mother’s Day and the fact that I’m a mom, I reserve the right to address the subject again! This week, we’re looking at a talk from 1974, given by Bishop H. Burke Peterson of the Presiding Bishopric. The talk is entitled “Mother, Catch the Vision of Your Call.” Bishop Peterson begins by citing the true story of a teenage delinquent. A neighbor remembered a time when, as a young child, he had told her that there was no mother at his … Continue reading

LDS General Conference Scripture Citation Index

Have you ever wondered what the modern church leaders have said about a particular scripture verse or story? Now you have no reason to be curious. Two BYU faculty members, Richard C. Galbraith and Stephen W. Liddle, have created an online citation database that links scriptures to Conference talks. This web site can further enhance your daily scripture study, or help you prepare for lessons or talks. Galbraith and Liddle brought their site online a few years ago and have been working constantly to improve it. Rather than searching for a General Conference talk by subject, you can click on … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: “Flesh and Blood Hath Not Revealed It Unto Thee”

As we continue to study Lesson 13 in the New Testament manual, we come across a beautiful testimony of the divinity of the Savior by the apostle Peter. I would like to explore the idea of testimonies and where they take root from as we examine Matthew 16:13-19. Following the second miracle of the loaves and fishes, Jesus asks His disciples who men say He is. I found verse 13 a bit confusing, as Christ refers to himself as “I the Son of man”. I thought about how Satan referred to Moses as the son of man rather than the … Continue reading

The Mark of the Beast

“He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number … Continue reading

What is the Millennial Reign?

Some Christians, mostly conservative Protestants, believe that the Great Tribulation will be followed by the Millennial Reign of Christ on earth. This reign will take place after a rebellion of Satan, in which Satan was bound and cast into the bottomless pit, but before the final judgment of mankind. Since the earth was completely decimated during the Tribulation, God makes a new earth, completely restored, beautiful and sinless. During this time He lives and reigns will all of those who have trusted in Him throughout human history. Revelation 20:4-6 gives the Scriptural basis for this belief: And I saw thrones, … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Divine Communication

Several verses in Christ’s Sermon on the Mount focus on prayer. This should be no surprise, as prayer is an important and integral part of our relationship with our Heavenly Father. In our earthly relationships, communication is essential or the relationship is nonexistent; it should be no surprise that it conversation is equally required in our relationship with our Lord. But we must always remember that, just as conversation is two-way, prayer also involves us speaking and listening. If we omit the part of the prayer where we receive revelation and inspiration from our Father, the prayer is incomplete. Most … Continue reading
