Fun Riddles

“Laughter is the best medicine,” is actually a true statement. Laughing releases chemicals in the brain, which in turn make a person feel better. In previous blogs Laura Torres talked about the value of jokes and knock-knock jokes and shared some of her favorites. But I prefer riddles. They require the listener to really think about the question before answering. Typically the obvious answer is incorrect. The one telling the riddle is usually the one to get the best laugh. Q. A plane crashes on the border of the United States and Canada. Where do they bury the survivors? A. … Continue reading

Someone who is looking for small appliances to replace old ones or to stock a new home is in luck. Cheap Thrills

Remember the good ol’ days when you could stick a box of Kleenex in front of your baby and he would be entertained for hours pulling tissues out one by one? A box of facial tissue is a cheap way to keep your toddler happy, but then that little guy grows up and starts asking for expensive electronic toys that cost more than your monthly water bill. That’s when you need to get creative. And by creative I mean teach your kids how to embrace old school cheap thrills: simple and safe pranks that don’t require a lot of masterminding … Continue reading

Holiday Jollies

The best part of the holiday season is getting together with family and friends to share a few laughs.  Or, in some case, huge belly busters that have you rolling on the floor gasping for air. One of the simplest ways to share a seasonal smile is to tell a Christmas joke.  Kids and adults alike appreciate a good holiday riddle.  What’s more, clean, seasonal funnies can be added to Christmas cards, family newsletters or used as an ice breaker at a company party or family get-together.  If you are entertaining kids this month, consider printing out the following … Continue reading

Pancake Day

When I told my so it was National Pancake Day, he almost jumped out of his skin with excitement. He loves making pancakes almost as much as he loves eating them. Yet, we all know that white flour, sugar, and syrup are not part of a healthy diet. Since I am trying to cut down on refined sugar and white flour in my family, I challenged him to find a recipe to suit out new changes. He found a fantastic recipe that is so good you won’t miss a thing. I did not use syrup on my pancakes. I substituted … Continue reading

A Fun Weekend In Maine

This weekend, I went to Maine with the boys and my husband’s parents. It has pretty much become an annual trip for us, and we go the same weekend every year so that we can go to the Common Ground Fair, which takes place in the town of Unity. The Common Ground Fair is a unique and special event that is focused on sustainability and environmental awareness. There are many educational opportunities for adults, and also many fun things for children of all ages. While we were at the fair, Dylan was able to try doing some new things. Pritikin Vegetable Quesadilla

It’s shocking how much sodium and calories are in many restaurant quesadillas. Chili’s Bacon Ranch Chicken Quesadilla, for example, tallies up a whopping 1,650 calories and 3,450 milligrams of sodium (that’s double the sodium that most of us should have in an entire day, say the recently-released 2010 U.S. Dietary Guidelines. With foods like this, there’s a very good chance you’ll never need blood pressure medication, or extra-large clothes. Ingredients Serves 2 2 cups julienned (sliced in long, thin strips) fresh vegetables … Continue reading

Thalidomide Maker’s Apology Not Enough

A few days ago, Gruenenthal, the maker of thalidomide, issued an apology to the people who were affected by the drug. Thalidomide caused severe birth defects in thousands of babies. Many are seeing the apology by the drug maker, decades after the damage was done, to be lacking. Thalidomide is a drug that was made by a German company named Gruenenthal. The drug was intended to be used by women who were pregnant as a cure for morning sickness. It was sold in the 1950’s and 1960’s in 46 countries including the UK, Australia, and what was once West Germany. … Continue reading
