Hitting The Road In A RV

Call me naïve, but I figured with the price of fuel hitting record highs there would be far fewer gas guzzling recreational vehicles on the road this summer. Boy, was I wrong. Apparently, Americans (at least those driving through Illinois and Wisconsin) are denying high gas prices and hitting the highways in RVs. I know this because I was stuck behind a caravan of them on the way back from our family’s 4th of July festivities. About a year ago I wrote a blog about the costs involved in traveling in a RV. Price, it seems, has not affected the … Continue reading

How Well Do You Know The Rules Of The Road?

When was the last time you paged through your state’s motorists handbook? You know, the one a person seeking to obtain a learner’s permit must memorize in order to pass the test. My teenage cousin will be taking her test next month and last night I was quizzing her on some of the questions that may appear on her test. It was an eye-opening experience to say the least. Namely, because it has been two decades since I got my driver’s license, which means it’s been even longer since I cracked opened a book to review the rules of the … Continue reading

Sharing The Road With The Nations Worst Drivers

Despite the record-breaking gas prices, many families still plan to take to the highways this summer. If your summer road trip includes driving to the Northeast portion of the U.S.–beware. According to a new study, that’s where you will find some of the country’s worst drivers. Recently, GMAC Insurance administered a test – “similar to a traditional licensing test at the local DMV.” The written test measured basic knowledge of traffic laws and safety. Of the more than 5,000 drivers tested, “nearly 10% were unable to answer enough questions correctly to achieve a passing score of 70.” Test results showed … Continue reading

Carpooling: A Company’s Success Story

This is a follow-up to my “Leave Your Car at Home Day” blog. In it I highlighted the benefits of using local Park & Ride lots to combat rising gas prices. Today, I am sticking with the subject of carpooling and sharing with you a story that may further encourage you to carpool. A company located near my home started a carpool program more than five years ago. (I live in a fairly small city and carpooling is not as popular as it is in bigger metropolitan areas. We don’t have a carpool or “ZIPPER” lane and the rush-hour commute … Continue reading

“Leave Your Car at Home Day”

Today our city is celebrating, “Leave Your Car at Home Day.” With gas prices hitting record highs (some stations in our state have passed the $3 mark), this effort is not going unnoticed. The bus is offering free rides and others are bicycling or even inline skating around town. There is no question about it… the price of fuel is having an effect on just about everyone’s travel plans. According to AAA, nationwide the average price for a gallon of gas is $2.80. It’s one of the reasons I have seen (and I’m sure if you look around your city, … Continue reading

RV-ing: Is it Right for You?

You would think that with gas prices hitting record highs that recreational vehicle (RV) travel would be experiencing record lows. But, according to trade groups, while sales of large motor homes have hit a road bump, there has been a boom in sales of smaller, lower-priced models that get better gas mileage. Americans spend $14 billion a year on recreational vehicles. From fully contained motor homes to popup campers. Travel experts say it is an ideal way to strengthen family bonds. It lends itself to adventure and convenience, which makes it increasingly popular with parents looking for vacation options that … Continue reading
