Something Wonderful

Have you ever noticed in the movies how the guy always knows the right thing to say? You know what I mean, the romantic words, the flowery speeches you wish your husband would say and doesn’t. Why is that? The reason is because life is not a movie. In a script the character is saying lines the scriptwriter or scriptwriters have spent a long time carefully crafting to get the words just right. The actor and director have spent time making sure the words sound natural. Real life doesn’t work as neatly as movies or as it does for the … Continue reading

Looking for Romance in The Wrong Places

Sometimes we can look for romance in all the wrong places. Like this story of women who looked for romance in the toilet. This is not a joke, although it does have a humorous side to it. This story, told me by a writer friend, is about a woman he used to know who had a free lending library in her toilet. Now before you get the wrong idea here. The space was there but the toilet had not been installed. Her husband, a long distance truck driver, had a habit of never finishing jobs he started. In their ‘unpainted … Continue reading

A Love Story of Sorts

I love that Mick and I can enjoy a romantic movie together. The other week we recorded one of the midday movies to watch at a later time. I’d read the write up in the TV guide, saw Cheryl Ladd was in the movie – Mick and I remembered her from way back with the original Charlie’s Angels. I thought for the write up it sounded like it might be okay. Our theory is if it doesn’t capture our interest then we just stop watching and wipe it off. After choir I’m usually hyped up and find it hard to … Continue reading

Can Watching Romantic Movies Negatively Affect Your Marriage?

According to an article in the Sydney Morning Herald by novelist Jojo Moyes, and based on research from the ‘Family and Personal Relationships Laboratory at Heriot-Watt university in Edinburgh,’ watching romantic moves can be detrimental to marriage giving people an unrealistic view of relationships and marriage. While common sense might tell us there is no such thing as the perfect relationship, the conclusion is that some people are far more influenced by what they see on film or read in books than they realize claims Dr Bjarne Holmes, conductor of the research. Films and books often tap into this whole … Continue reading

52 Romantic Movies You Either Love or Hate

Dale’s blogs about some of her favorite romantic movies (see “Favorite Romance Movies” and “Favorite Romance Movies-Part 2”) has inspired this next one from me. The idea took hold because I sympathized with a comment one reader, deedee1231, left on both blogs regarding the movie Casablanca. She wasn’t a fan. (Though she didn’t begrudge Dale for including it on her fave list.) Deedee1231 thought Casablanca was overhyped. (Though she also admitted she’d seen it so many times she was just plum over it.) I chuckled with sympathy when I read her comment. Though it wasn’t Casablanca I had in mind, … Continue reading

Favorite Romance Movies- Part 2

Following on from my last post of favorite romantic movies here are the rest. The Illusionist -This is without doubt a love story of a couple separated by class, upbringing, distance and various other problems. But they risk all to find a way to be together. The sex scene in this movie is artistically handled. This is one of Mick’s and my favorite films. Can you guess that we both like films where love triumphs over the odds? It’s a bit like our own romance but that’s another story. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner- I’ve always been a big fan … Continue reading
