More Ways to Save Money on Your Summer Vacation

In my previous blog I told you about a new series I’m starting called “Saving Money on Your Summer Vacation.” With the economy faltering some families are considering giving up their annual family vacations in order to spare the household’s bottom line. However, as you saw in my last blog with a little planning there are ways you can explore the nation’s top tourist spots without going bankrupt in the process. This week I am turning the spotlight on San Diego. Now that you know what attractions you can get into for free here’s a list of some of the … Continue reading

Saving Money on Your Summer Vacation

With the economy slumping, the price of gas at an all time high, and food costs soaring some families are seriously considering staying home this summer instead of embarking on an annual vacation. As such I have decided to create a new series in the TRAVEL blogs called: “Saving Money on Your Summer Vacation.” Each week I will spotlight a popular family friendly vacation destination and list ways you can take in the sights without breaking the bank. Today we begin with San Diego, California. It’s one of the nation’s top tourist destinations, but it is also one of the … Continue reading

If one of your New Year’s resolutions includes learning to master a new sport this next travel deal could put you on track to accomplishing your goal in 2008. Granted, you must know how to swim, but other than that there are few restrictions associated with Surf Diva’s latest offer. In the years since its inception Surf Diva has been joined by numerous … Continue reading

Airport Perks

No airline passenger enjoys being delayed regardless of what airport he or she is sentenced to do time in. However, there are some airports in the United States where conquering boredom is a bit easier than others. Take a look: SAN DIEGO San Diego International is getting passengers jazzed up about flying into or out of its facility by continuing its popular Terminal Jazz Performance concerts. The mini music fests are free and accessible to ticketed passengers and have been a proven hit among travelers since the program’s inception more than a year ago. The airport’s 2008 season will kick … Continue reading

California Wildfires Putting the Heat on Tourist Hot Spots

If you’ve watched even a few minutes of the news in the last week then you seen that parts of California have been reduced to a charred smoky mess. It’s an image tourism officials in Southern California don’t want you to see. As firefighters scramble to extinguish the remaining wildfires, members of San Diego’s Convention and Visitors Bureau are scurrying to do damage control of their own. One official with the group recently told news reporters: “The fires have been a horrible situation, but (the impact on the city) also has been a little overblown. You would think that every … Continue reading

Celebrate Fall In San Diego

Personally, I think San Diego shines all year round. But in the fall, the area plays host to a number of outstanding family friendly events, which makes visiting even more worthwhile. Sure, the city is home to world famous vacation attractions such as the San Diego Zoo, Legoland and SeaWorld, which are open all year long, but if you are looking for unique fall-related special events to attend with your children the city is a premiere destination. Take a look at just some of the kid-friendly festivals that will be getting underway in the next couple of weeks: Fleet Week. … Continue reading

Sleeping With The Snakes

What world famous attraction is home to more than 4,000 animals, 700,000 exotic plants and attracts more than a million visitors each year? If you answered: the San Diego Zoo, you’re right. The zoo is spread out over 100-acres, but the nice part is you that can get around without much walking at all. For a small fee, buses will take you from exhibit to exhibit or you can opt to hop aboard the Skyfari ride, which provides a full aerial view of the property. Despite the various modes of transportation, the zoo is so enormous it is next to … Continue reading

Legoland In Las Vegas?

Not quite. My 7-year-old godson Cody just returned from a spring break trip to San Diego with his mother (my best friend) and when I asked him what his favorite part of the trip was he answered: “Seeing Las Vegas at Legoland!” Interesting… I hadn’t realized that Sin City was making an appearance at the California theme park. “Miniland Las Vegas,” Cody’s mom correctly pointed out. Ah yes, yet another reason to visit Legoland California. Miniland Las Vegas is a new plastic brick replica of the world-famous Las Vegas Strip, which consists of more than 2 million LEGO bricks. It … Continue reading

America’s Most Haunted House?

Did you know there are houses that are listed as authentic haunted houses by the U.S. government? I didn’t either until we visited the Whaley House in San Diego. The United States Department of Commerce has named the Whaley House as one of the thirty homes across the country that they believe to be haunted. Another house certified as haunted is the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose. The Whaley House is located in a part of San Diego called “Old Town.” Thomas Whaley moved himself and his family into the house in 1857. In addition to housing the Whaley … Continue reading

Point Loma Lighthouse

My husband loves lighthouses, so any time we are near one, we must visit. This is fine because I like lighthouses as well. The one thing that makes me a bit sad is I believe almost all of them are automated now, so it takes some of the romance out of it. When we lived in San Diego, we visited the Old Point Loma Lighthouse several times with friends and family. The lighthouse is located near the Cabrillo National Monument. In 1542, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo became the first European to sit foot on the West Coast when he landed at … Continue reading
