Autumn Recipes: J is for Jambalaya

I live in Wisconsin, home of the world famous Green Bay Packers and the place others come to learn how to tailgate. Around here autumn is known as tailgating season and not just at legendary Lambeau Field. They’re tailgating at Miller Park in Milwaukee, at Camp Randall in Madison, heck, my neighbors tailgate at the local park prior to their grandson’s Little League games. And while it may be hard to believe, residents here cook up more than just brats and cheese curds on game day. Despite its southern roots, Wisconsinites love whipping up a piping hot batch of jambalaya. … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: Bangers & Mash

Last night, I cooked a some traditional Banger pork sausage on the grill while indoors four large Russet Potatoes enjoyed a stovetop Jacuzzi. To the potatoes, I added a bit of light sour cream, a pat or two of salted butter and a lot of finely chopped chives from my herb garden. It marks the first time I have prepared this customary British meal for my family. I had a plate of Bangers & Mash while in London four years ago and loved it – last night I finally got around to making it at home. It is a delicious, … Continue reading

Sausage and Waffles—The Keys To A Long Life?

California’s oldest living person who at 112 credited his longevity to a diet of sausage and waffles has died. But, doctors say it wasn’t due to his junk food diet. In fact, physicians are still scratching their heads in disbelief over the fact that George Johnson survived as long as he did given what he consumed on a daily basis. “He had terrible bad habits. He had a diet largely of sausages and waffles,” Dr. L. Stephen Coles, founder of the Gerontology Research Group at the University of California, Los Angeles, told reporters following Johnson’s death last week. Doctors say … Continue reading

Jimmy Dean Skillets

Recently I saw a commercial for Jimmy Dean Skillets. I generally ignore commercials with Jimmy Dean meat products because I am not a big fan of breakfast sausage. Well, my in-laws were in town last week and my father-in-law mentioned something about trying “that new Jimmy Dean thing for breakfast one morning.” I was going to the store anyway, so I figured I would pick up one for him. As I was standing in the breakfast section of the frozen foods aisle, I saw the little bags of the Jimmy Dean skillets. What surprised me was that not only did … Continue reading
