The Greatest Sports Gambling Scandals – Pete Rose

I have not doubt that a young Pete Rose heard the story of the Chicago Black Sox when he was growing up. However, it apparently had no effect on him at all. Pete Rose was a cornerstone of the Cincinnati Reds for twenty-three years. He played with them his entire major league baseball career – something you don’t see much of now days. Right before he retired as a player (and for three years afterwards), Rose served as the manager of the Reds. But, I guess all the fame and glory of his baseball days wasn’t enough because Rose bet … Continue reading

Rock Star Babylon: They Did What?

I love the “Babylon” books – those named, of course, after the biblical city Babylon. These books talk about the materialistic and hedonistic pleasures of – you guessed it – celebrities and musicians. The first one I read was “Hollywood Babylon: The Legendary Underground Classic of Hollywood’s Darkest and Best Kept Secrets” by Kenneth Anger. Ah, this one dished a lot of dirt about classic Hollywood stories: Errol Flynn’s brushes with under aged girls (which lead to brushes with the law), Rudolph Valentino (was the “Latin Lover” really gay?), the Fatty Arbuckle scandal (so much for “innocent until proven guilty”), … Continue reading

A Wife’s Public Embarrassment: Dina Matos Sympathizes with Silda Spitzer’s Plight

Yesterday’s top news story was the deep do-do New York Governor Eliot Spitzer found himself in after he was linked to a prostitution ring. Standing there by his side when he addressed the media was his wife, Silda. This morning on Today, Matt Lauer interviewed another woman who was in Silda’s spot four years ago: Dina Matos, wife of former New Jersey Governor James McGreevy who admitted to having an affair with another man. Just as Silda had stood by her husband’s side during his press conference, so did Dina. Just as the hearts of others went out to her … Continue reading

Mike Tyson Pleads Guilty to Drug Charge

If there were two sports legends that I could do without ever hearing about again, it would be O.J. Simpson and Mike Tyson. Both were extremely, extremely talented athletes who chose to let their personal lives overshadow and taint their professional athletic careers. And now both are back in the news. You know that O.J. attempted to retrieve some of “his” possessions from a dealer in Las Vegas. He was released on $125,000 bail and is back at his home in Florida, but faces eleven charges, ten of which are felonies. He could face life in prison if convicted of … Continue reading

Superman in Hollywoodland

I’ve mentioned before what a big part of pop culture the Superman character is. But even those who play Superman seem to make the news, whether it is good or bad. Some actors who play the Man of Steel get typecast as Superman. Such was the plight of George Reeves, who played Superman on the television show during the 1950s. There was so much controversy around his death that almost 50 years later, there is a new movie coming about it called Hollywoodland, starring Ben Affleck as Reeves. If you don’t know the story behind the man that will always … Continue reading

The Sopranos Stars – Real Life Dramas

America seems to love the HBO series The Sopranos. So much so that they waited two long years for its return – something almost unheard of in television land. However, the show may be short-lived as many of the stars are having real life run-ins with drama. The star of the show, James Gandolfini, just recently collided with a taxi while riding his scooter in New York City. But, his wreck is nothing compared to what some of the Soprano actors have gone through: Robert Iler, who portrays A.J. Soprano, had a run-in with the law at a very young … Continue reading

Lou Tellegen – A Hollywood Tragedy

Hollywood is filled with stories of fame and fortune. But it also has its share of scandals and sadness. When walking the streets of Hollywood, it is as if you can see the ghosts of the past – those who achieved fame then fell from grace or those that never were lucky enough to have ever achieved it at all. Most of you about the tragic deaths of Sharon Tate, killed at the hands of a hippie cult or Sal Mineo, brutally attacked and stabbed to death by a stranger in the night. But many people may not have heard … Continue reading
