Parents Peeved Over School Scare

My kindergartner freaks out when she sees a speck of blood, so I can only image her reaction to seeing bloody concrete, police tape and a chalk outline of a body on her way into school. Fortunately, she doesn’t attend class at Foxhill Primary in the UK. Purses, Parents, and Principals

Here’s a question for all you moms out there: How lost would you be without your purse? Mothers and daughters in Indiana are answering that question, but administrators at a local high school in the state don’t want to hear it. It’s been all over the news: Female students at Hanover Central High School in Cedar Lake, Indiana just want to carry their purses to the bathroom, but the principal there says, “No way!” The school already has a policy that bans backpacks and book bags in classes, but this year it amended that rule to prohibit purses as well. … Continue reading →

Tornado Hits Alabama School

Tennessee and Alabama were no strangers to storms today. Schools in all surrounding counties, including mine, closed early. The students, teachers, and parents here in southern Tennessee were blessed. We safely loaded children either into the car with parents or on the school bus and sent them home without any problems. One school in the nearby state of Alabama was not so fortunate. At around 12:45 this afternoon, a tornado hit Enterprise High School in Enterprise, Alabama. The school stadium was destroyed. School Problems Have Changed

Have you ever thought about how much schools have changed in the last fifty years or so. I had realized that the challenges faced by kids today are much greater then twenty or even ten years ago. But when I came across this chart, which shows a survey of schoolteachers from an article titled “School Violence Prevention: Strategies to Keep Schools Safe,” by Snell and Volokh, I was surprised at how much times have changed. Teaching Your Child About Strangers

Last year my son’s elementary school had three bomb threats. Luckily there wasn’t a bomb, they were just threats. A few months ago a man, who had been reported driving around my sister’s neighborhood, was caught after the girl he kidnapped wouldn’t stop screaming. Last week my son brought home a note saying that a child predator has been trying to solicit children who are waiting at the bus stop and to be on the look out.
