When I watch the evening news it makes installing a home security system seem like a logical decision. The Top 3 reasons to install a home security system: Protection: Everyone has a different level of need for protection. It’s a simply formula of whom, what and where. The basic math is the more “who‘s” your are responsible to keep safe and the more “what’s” you have collected along the way, the more protection you and your family need. Balancing Security and Ambition for the Single Parent

I think many of us walk a tightrope between clinging to and working for the security of ourselves and our families, and indulging our ambitions and taking those big risks. For a single parent, that tightrope can feel even more precarious—do we focus JUST on establishing and maintaining security for our families, or do we stretch ourselves and give in to our personal or work-related ambitions? And, what if we don’t think we ARE very ambitious—is this a personality failing that will hurt our families in the long run? I confess that trying to establish some security for my family … Continue reading

Keeping Your Kids in the Loop During Transition and Change

As single parents, we have to watch out that we don’t have messy boundaries with our children and tell them TOO much; being careful not to turn to our kids as we would an adult peer or partner. But, on the other side of the coin, we do have to make sure that we include them in discussions that affect the family and keep them in the loop when we are going through times of insecurity, transition and major change. When custody arrangements change, or there are job changes on the horizon, as well as during a separation, divorce, etc.–we … Continue reading

Ask Yourself—How Secure is Your Business?

Balancing risk and security is the challenge of any business owner. We do not want to be so focused on keeping things stable that we avoid taking the risks necessary to actually grow a business. Teen Flies High Without Parents’ Permission—Is The Airline To Blame?

By now I’m sure you’ve heard the story about the 15-year-old girl who bought a ticket and boarded a plane without ever being asked to show her ID. The teen from Alaska apparently neglected to ask her parents permission to take the flight and now the girl’s mom says the airline is partially to blame for her daughter ending up hundreds of miles from home. In all fairness to the mother, she’s not slapping the airlines with a lawsuit (at least not yet anyway), though she is lobbying to get the carrier to reconsider its current policies. For those of … Continue reading

So Much For The ShoeScanner

I was really rooting for this machine. As I mentioned in a previous blog I travel with a young child and had really hoped the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) would be able to work out the kinks with the ShoeScanner they were testing at a Florida airport. I happen to be one of the airline passengers who had hoped to someday go through airport security without having to take my shoes off. The ShoeScanner was supposed to make that happen. For those of you who are not familiar with the security device it was supposed to work like this: Passengers … Continue reading

The Arts of Pursuit and Persuasion in Your Home Business

Wouldn’t it be fabulous if all we had to do was decide that we were going into business, hang up our shingle, open the doors, and the customers would come pouring into our business waving dollar bills? Of course, that is not how things happen and it takes plenty of effort on our parts to attract and keep those valuable customers. I cannot help but think there is a bit of artistry to pursuing and persuading customers—no matter what the field or industry. Where the artistry comes in is that while we are trying to get those bodies into our … Continue reading
