Beauty Queen Told to GAIN Weight

Just file it under “Things You Don’t Hear Everyday.” Did you happen to see Miss England Georgia Horsley’s interview on NBC’s “Today” show on Friday? The British beauty queen revealed to “Today” show co-host Meredith Vieira that she was asked to “pack on a few pounds” for the upcoming Miss World pageant. You read that right—GAIN weight, not lose it. The 20-year-old beauty contestant says she was shocked by the request mainly because she is far from rail-thin. The 5-foot-8, Horsley weighs about 125 pounds and says she sports a boyish, athletic-type figure as opposed to the voluptuous curvy figures … Continue reading

When Size Affects Income

Size discrimination affects skinny people as well as obese people. One does not have to be anorexic to have an ultra thin frame. One of my aunts is 5’8” tall and wears a size 6. She doesn’t like to talk about weight although she has never been larger. Occasionally, she hears negative comments about her size which makes her angry. These are rude, insensitive comments that she has heard for most of her life. Throughout her twenties and thirties, she was no larger than a size 4. In her adolescent years, she could wear a size zero. She has been … Continue reading

Tall and Skinny

Talk about clever… did you hear about the baseball fan who came up with a way to watch the World Series in person without having to shell out hundreds of dollars for a ticket? Instead of paying for a seat he donned 4-foot stilts and watched through the steel gates. Twenty-nine-year-old Brian Harpster told news reporters that from his spot on his stilts he could see the outfield, the pitching and any balls hit in play, but he couldn’t see the batters on Saturday night during his attempt to watch the Tigers’ first World Series game in 22 years. (By … Continue reading

The Invention That Has People Smiling–Or How To Look Skinnier In Pictures

The holidays are coming… the holidays are coming… time to grab those cameras and all those friends and relatives who flee at the sight of a photographic device while whining: “Don’t take my picture I look fat.” (I’m guilty of letting the phrase slip from my lips as well, though I am usually the one holding the camera trying to wrangle loved ones together so my daughter has documented proof that they exist long after they fly back to their respective homes—but I digress.) Let’s face it; there aren’t very many people who like the way they look in pictures. … Continue reading

Not Something You Hear Everyday

Well, here’s something you don’t hear everyday… or ever, for that matter. According to news reports, organizers of Spain’s top annual fashion show have booted five models from this year’s event because they are considered… “too thin.” What? Stop the world from spinning. Did I read that correctly? “Too SKINNY?” The news is true. In fact, the decision to reject the skinny models was made unilaterally by event organizers who made it a rule that women below a predetermined body mass index would not be allowed to strut their stuff (what little they have) down the catwalk. Fashion show organizers … Continue reading

Katie Couric’s “Magic” Weight Loss Program

Leave it to Katie Couric to make light of a “weighty” situation. That’s exactly what she has done with the very uncomfortable situation she was presented with courtesy of some “creative digital airbrushing.” The editorial staff of a promotional magazine (which is only distributed to CBS stations and passengers aboard American Airlines) took the liberty of retouching a photo taken of Couric at a recent advertising presentation. Editors of “Watch!” magazine say they digitally altered Couric’s photo to make her look about 20 pounds thinner, without the knowledge of Couric and CBS News management. But, the incoming CBS Evening News … Continue reading

Excess Body Fat May Be Protective

There is a lot of controversy surrounding recently released studies that seem to indicate that excess body fat may not be all bad. In fact, in some groups, obese people tend to live longer as their body fat may be protective of them in some ways. For most of us, that flies completely in the face of every other news report out there – is it true or not? Do we need to lose weight or can we just stop with the constant running the treadmill to get to the ideal body weight? What’s the skinny? The skinny, or the … Continue reading
