SNOW DAY FUN!

Is there anything better than a snow day? An unexpected day off from work spent with my family is tops in my book. We had a feeling that today would turn into a day at home when we pulled into our driveway yesterday only to be greeted by several inches of fresh powder. After a night of freezing rain we found that daycare had been closed so we promptly called out of work and crawled back into bed for another hour. I served waffles and sausage with syrup for my two beautiful girls and put out a plate of fresh … Continue reading

At The Car Wash!

If your family car is anything like mine, a murky shade of charcoal grey with complimentary streaks of black and white has replaced your vehicle’s original color and sheen. Until mid-January, the frigid winter weather was a no-show here in the Northeast. But the curtain has officially closed on those springtime days of winter. We have since seen a few snowfalls, and I use that term extremely liberally as accumulation has not once topped an inch. The storms were hardly worth celebrating as they blew into town Santa-style, while we were snug in our beds. And while no two of … Continue reading

Snowballs, Snowmen, and a Dog Gone Wild

I hail from Denver and grew up with cold, snowy winters. My pup Murph, however, was born in the Sunshine State of Florida and grew up with mild winter weather. Late in 2005 we moved to Nashville, so last year was our first winter here. We saw a couple of snows that yielded about a half an inch or so each, but last Friday we woke to a blanket of almost two inches. Since I work from home and can set my own hours, I decided to take an extra long mid-morning break and take Murph outside to play. But … Continue reading

Home Heating Costs: Have You Done the Snow Test?

As I sit here in my little office in Pennsylvania, I can see the snow falling yet again. It has been snowing on and off for the past few days. Sometimes it sticks and sometimes it doesn’t. One thing that is consistent about the weather is that it has been cold. Brrrrrr. We are all walking around the house with double socks and pullover or zip-up jackets. The furnace seems to be constantly running, and I have been keeping the little ones in their footie pajamas. One of the benefits of the snow, believe it or not is an improved … Continue reading

Hypothermia

Winter has finally gotten serious in my part of Michigan. The first “pretty” snow is on the ground. You know the kind- it’s fluffy and soft and looks slightly shimmery, and it’s not too cold to go out and enjoy it. It won’t last; the bitter cold always follows the not-so-cold. A little cold or a lot cold, it’s all relative to me. I seem to be consistently cold. Some days there just doesn’t seem to be anything I can do to warm up. Let’s suppose for a minute that I got brave and decided to go out with the … Continue reading

Frugal Fun: Make Your Own Snow Paint

It is mid morning here in Pennsylvania, and the snow is gently falling. The big fat flakes are slow and relaxed, too soft to cancel school. The two youngest kids and I are spending the time alternately playing and watching the progress of the snow. Molly is dressing up her magnetic dolls for the wintery weather, and little Henry is working on getting his knees up to crawl. It is a wonderful cozy day, the kind that makes me happy to be able to work at home and spend my morning with my babies. By the time 3:30 rolls around, … Continue reading

What a Perfect Christmas!

I feel guilty writing on Christmas, but I just had to jot down my thoughts while my children are playing with their new things. It’s been a perfect Christmas so far and we still have several hours left. I’m feeling so blessed and content that I just had to share. We started yesterday, having our holiday dinner on Christmas Eve, which is becoming a tradition. We let the kids open one small gift after dessert – apple pie alamode. My husband and I greeted Christmas as it turned midnight, with a sip of bubbly. We slept soundly, and awoke this … Continue reading

Children’s Picture Books about The First Day of Winter

It’s the first official day of winter, although you wouldn’t know it by looking around here – we got hit hard this last weekend and it’s been winter around here ever since. The first book I’m reviewing is called, appropriately, “The First Day of Winter.” Written after the style of “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” we read about all the things that were given to our main character by his friend, but over ten days rather than twelve. I’ll spare you the buildup and skip to the grand finale, but you have to sing along with me. Ready? Take a … Continue reading

Walking in a Winter Wonderland – Snow shoeing

Show shoeing is a fantastic winter sport that most of us can do and is the equivalent of walking in the snow – without slogging in the snow. Whether you enjoy skiing or not, snow shoeing is worth checking out and what other way can you go walking in a beautiful winter wonderland while getting a good workout at a same time. Your body generates a great deal of body heat and will burn a great many calories during snow shoeing and you’ll discover that it’s far from a cold sport at all. One of the greatest boons of snow … Continue reading

New Snow Removal Innovations

As I mentioned in my previous blog in a few hours the remnants of our last snowfall should be history. Hooray! Don’t get me wrong I love the look of a fresh blanket of snow. It’s gorgeous—–for the first few minutes. I agree nothing is more beautiful the way the full moon glistens off a lawn of new fallen snow—in a photograph. And, yes, you just can’t beat 12-inches of perfect snowball packing snow—if you’re a kid and you’re getting a snow-day. However, if you’re a homeowner, nothing spells hours of backbreaking work more clearly than a few inches of … Continue reading
