Writers’ Strike Update

You’ll be watching a “Tonight Show” rerun on Monday if last-ditch talks don’t yield favorable results in the stalemate between film and TV writers and media companies. Right now picketers are preparing signs and strike sheets in New York and Los Angeles. However, according to news reports, both sides agreed to meet with a federal mediator on Sunday in a last-ditch effort to avoid an all out strike that would send thousands of writers to the picket line. But, given the current state of affairs (negotiations between the two parties began in July and were joined this week by a … Continue reading

How A Writers’ Strike Could Affect Your Favorite TV Shows

For those of you who have better things to worry about… Talks between Hollywood writers and producers have stalled. Translation: Your favorite TV shows could be disappearing in the weeks to come if a settlement is not reached. According to leaders for the Writer’s Guild of America (WGA), a strike could happen as early as tomorrow if enough members decide NOT to work without a contract while a deal is being hammered out. WGA members’ contracts expired last night. Earlier in the day talks between the writers from your favorite television shows and show producers ended abruptly with both sides … Continue reading

Soap Operas? Who has time?!

Have you noticed the banner ads for ABCs hit soap operas? These ads got me thinking about stay home moms and work at home moms often being seen as making our lives revolve around daytime dramas. I have to admit, years ago, I was a General Hospital fan. Frankly, that was back when I was really too young to be watching such shows, young innocent teenager that I was. I began watching again towards the end of my pregnancy with my youngest child, while I was on bed rest. As soon as I was back on my feet, I turned … Continue reading

Is Your Marriage on the Back Burner?

The back burner is a term often used with regard to soap operas for characters that do not play a pivotal role in a current storyline. We may see them, but we don’t spend a lot of time with them. They drift into and out of the canvas of the current storyline with relatively little impact. When your marriage is on the backburner is can be because you are devoting so much time, energy and emotion into your children, family, career or some combination of the above that you unconsciously detach yourself from your spouse. The Parent Trap The parent … Continue reading

Luke and Laura—Back Together Again!

“General Hospital” fans are ecstatic (at least I am) about the news that Luke and Laura Spencer (the ABC soap opera’s most popular couple) will be reunited once again. According to ABC, Genie Francis, who originated the role of Laura nearly 30 years ago, will return to the show to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Luke and Laura’s wedding. The fictional wedding, seen by 30 million viewers on Nov. 16, 1981, is still ranked as one of the most watched shows in television history. At the time, there was so much hype surrounding the TV nuptials that Newsweek magazine put … Continue reading

A Departure of Sorts

I have a bit of a departure from my normal marriage blogs – though since this is an ever changing, ever evolving blog – I guess it wouldn’t necessarily be a departure from the “norm” so much as treading into new ground. Over the years, I’ve observed how our culture views marriage both in our literature and in our entertainment through movies and television. The one model of entertainment that addresses marriage over and over again is the soap opera. For more than 50 years soap operas have been among the dominant forms of daytime entertainment and even rising to … Continue reading
