Dealing with Prejudice

I received one of the most rude, narrow-minded, bigoted comments on a blog today. When I weighed 260 pounds, I dealt with people’s attitudes toward my weight all the time. To salespeople, I didn’t exist. I’d walk into a store with the intent to purchase something (usually grossly overpriced clothing) an be completely ignored. Eventually, I found that I received better customer service by online ordering. If I had the nerve to go to a fast food restaurant and order anything more than a salad, I’d get “the look”. If you’ve ever been on the receiving end of the look, … Continue reading

E-mail Marketing—Make Sure You Let People “Opt Out”

In some of the work I do, I use e-mail as a major marketing tool. I have found that many people are now afraid of using e-mail for marketing, fearing that they will be considered “Spam-ers.” There is a way to be respectful and not annoying, and still have the ease and inexpensiveness of e-mail marketing. When I do e-mail marketing, I e-mail only to those people who have said that they want to be contacted this way—either by giving their e-mail or registering (on paper or web site) for e-mail updates. This is not enough, however. I think it … Continue reading

Two More Painless Ways to Protect the Environment

If the effort is painless, why not do our part, right? What if it’s even better than painless? What if these tips could make life even easier, and at the same time be good for the environment? They do both. That’s why they are two of the favorite tips I’ve found: conduct as much correspondence online as possible instead of through [paper] mail, and curb the flow of all that [paper] junk mail. Computer Correspondence You can pay bills and receive your monthly statements online, as well as asking questions about products or looking for coupons, rebates, etc. You might … Continue reading

Ahoy Captain – Spam Bots on the Horizon!

Okay, so I think I’m a lot funnier than I really am, what can I say? Today, I wanted to talk about spam bots, and why it is that people write their e-mail addresses so strangely (myself is included in that bunch.) First off, spam bots are not large metallic robots crawling all over spam, although that picture is a bit closer to the truth than you might think. Spam bots are programs (robots without the metal body) that are sent out onto the world wide web to search for e-mail addresses. Every time they find one, the data is … Continue reading

Teaching Internet Safety via Games

As more and more children spend time on the internet, it is important they understand about safety. Between companies trying to make offers tempting to young minds and predators lurking in dark (and sometimes bright) corners, we need to do everything possible to teach them safety. Today, game manufacturers are getting in on the game plan by putting together games that help with internet safety. I wanted to tell you about two specific games designed for this very purpose, both excellent. The first is a game called Privacy Playground: The First Adventure of the Three Little CyperPigs. This particular game … Continue reading

Giving your email out on message boards

As a moderator to a few message boards, I often see people say “email me with more info!” Ohh! This is not a good idea for many, many reasons. 1.)Spammers. Email harvesters spend time combing message boards looking for email addresses to add to their list to either spam or sell. All that means for you is more junk mail. 2.)Solicitors. Now you have invited anyone and everyone to solicit you with their information. These people will email you once hoping you’ll respond. Though some of what you get will be legit, you will get a ton of scams sent … Continue reading

Scams (Identifying email scams)

You will find a ton of information on avoiding scams all over the internet, yet people fall for them all the time. I wanted to share some tips that will help you identify a scam. In reality, a scam is usually pretty obvious. It looks like a great opportunity that you can’t believe you have actually come across something this great! However, there is always a little something that tugs at your conscious like paying for information, giving them money for a background check, or cashing a check and transferring funds. EMAIL JOB OFFERS SCENARIO 1: You get an email … Continue reading

All About SPAM

Whether you eat it or not, SPAM is a part of our pop culture. When I was growing up, you knew what SPAM was – a mystery meat that came in a can, but still managed to taste good. SPAM was born in 1937 and was originally called Hormel Spiced Ham. Kenneth Daigneau placed the entry “SPAM” in a contest to rename the product and the rest is history. You may be wondering…what exactly is SPAM? According to Hormel’s web page, it is a mixture of chopped pork shoulder with ham added, salt, water, sugar, and sodium nitrite. It doesn’t … Continue reading
