More Cultural Travel Experiences

In a previous blog I discussed the growing popularity of travelers wanting to immerse themselves in foreign countries. Several companies offer package deals that allow you to participate in immersion programs and provide accommodations, meals and transportation. They are typically pricier than the standard cultural programs that offer basic amenities minus transportation fees. My last blog detailed my fantasy all-you-can-eat trip around Japan. However, if you prefer to spend your vacation consuming more lessons than calories then I would recommend an extremely affordable Spanish immersion course in colonial Mexico that will cost you less than $300 per week. The Cuernavaca … Continue reading

Eight Animals on the Town – Susan Middleton Elya

When I reviewed “Eight Animals Bake a Cake,” I was delighted with the concept of the book, which interspersed Spanish and English words throughout. With more Spanish-speaking citizens in America than ever before, I think it would be very valuable for our children, and ourselves, to pick up some basic words of Spanish so we can communicate with our neighbors. Conversely, these books can be used to teach a few basic words in English, as well. “Eight Animals on the Town” continues the format and tells the story of our animal friends and their trip to the mercado (market). The … Continue reading

Creeping Doubts: Missing Something?

Just when you think you are on the right track, the doubts creep in. We are kind of on the home stretch where homeschooling is concerned. With one child starting a high school program though officially in the 8th grade, and the other starting grade 6, I was beginning to think all of the hard work was done, and the rest of the journey would be up to them. … And then I had a conversation. A close relative has a child in college who happened to go to an excellent high school and middle school where she received foreign … Continue reading

1,2,3 Count With Me

I have always been a huge fan of everything Sesame Street. I grew up watching the show as a child, and attribute much of my basic knowledge, including how to could to ten in Spanish, to the show. There is something about the characters on Sesame Street that was always able to quickly grab my attention, and keep it until the show was over. “1, 2, 3 Count With me” is a thirty minute movie put out by Sesame Street. The video features Elmo, Ernie, and the Count and in the movie Ernie teaches kids exactly how important it can … Continue reading

Learn a Foreign Language on Your Computer!

Before I was able to graduate from college I was required to learn a foreign language. Never one of my strong suites I struggle through several classes, eventually choosing to do a summer study abroad in France in order to immerse myself in the language and satisfy the foreign language requirement. Foreign languages can be tough to learn, and as more and more foreigners move into the US a foreign language is always a good thing to try and learn. Your computer can be a valuable tool in a quest to learn a foreign language. I always learn a little … Continue reading

“You Say Hola, I Say Hello” by Elizabeth Zapata

In today’s world our children come in contact with the Spanish language on almost a daily basis. In a US where Spanish is becoming such a prominent language it’s important to start to teach our children Spanish early. The book “You say Hola, I say Hello” is a good book for younger kids to learn some basic Spanish, and can open up a discussion between you and your youngster on tolerance of different languages and cultures. Although we may have different words to describe something, they mean the same thing. The book “You Say Hola, I say Hello” is written … Continue reading
