Spring Forward to Action: It’s a Wrap

Good morning and welcome to Friday. Today marks the end of the fourth week of our Spring Forward to Action challenge. Wow, four weeks went by quick. I started off this fitness challenge with the idea of building up endurance. My initial goal was to overcome the lethargy and weakness brought on by a prolonged recovery period after my surgery. Stamina Makes All the Difference When it comes to choosing a fitness plan and implementing one, stamina makes all the difference. It’s hard to maintain a workout program if you flag after just ten minutes of walking. The only way … Continue reading

Spring Forward to Action: Running Tips for Kids

Encouraging our kids to get more exercise is a parent’s duty. We need to kick them out of the house and off the video game players and out into the yard, to the park or to the playground where they can run. Where they can be kids, playing with other kids and being active. I can’t stress this enough because it’s important and with childhood obesity on the rise and the fact that the choices our kids make right now will affect their lifestyle choices for the rest of their lives. But you know that. I know you know that. … Continue reading

Spring Forward to Action: Week 4, Day 2: Happy May Day!

Welcome to the first day of May here in the Fitness Blog as we count down the last week of our Spring Forward to Action Challenge. How are you doing with your workout? As I described yesterday, I’m feeling pretty great about my workout. Today is a strength-training day and I’ll make use of my free weights and my balance ball. Balance Balls Are Great For Core Workouts They allow you to focus on key muscle groups and provide you with strong support. Performing crunches, sit-ups, and 7-7-7s with the balance ball is straightforward and easy enough to do. When … Continue reading

Spring Forward to Action Week 3, Day 4: Turning Down Free offers

There was a special going on at a local fitness club this week and they called to invite me in to enjoy the benefits of this special offer. For a few minutes of my time, I could go in and enjoy a ten-minute tour of the facility. During the tour, they would give me all the reasons why their club is the place for my business. Then, if I happened to be interested, I could sign up for a membership without any registration fee and pay a bargain basement price of $30 a month. Sounds like a great deal right? … Continue reading

The Fitness Blog Week in Review for April 14-20

It’s that time of the week and we’re going to take the time to review the week’s articles. It’s been a crazy week and I have some new stories to share for next week, including the fact that I picked up a new bike this weekend! I was fortunate enough to discover one that a friend wanted to sell at a garage sale and instead of being out a hundred for a new bike; I picked it up for just $15! I love a good bargain that lets me pursue my fitness ideals. In the meanwhile, here is our week … Continue reading

The Fitness Blog Week in Review for April 9- April 13

Is it already the weekend? It really feels like this week escaped without barely a gasp or a whimper. In fact, as I sit here and think about it – I can’t seem to remember what I was doing on Wednesday, at least not with any great clarity. Thursday, I can detail Thursday, because I spent the day with more than 20 first graders. It was a light week here in the fitness blog. Next week, however, we’re going to be busy every day, so get ready! For now, let’s take a quick look at our week in review: The … Continue reading

Spring Forward to Action: Put Your Best Foot Forward

As I mentioned Wednesday in: What Are We Doing?, we’re focusing on endurance this month and today is our second day of the official Spring Forward to Action plan and since I’m working on endurance, here’s what my workout plan for today looks like: 30 minutes on the treadmill at a comfortable 2.7 pace – this is my warm-up for the day Roller skating for fun – 30 minutes or so 20 minutes of yoga – always a great way to get the body and the mind in sync in the morning Okay, that was the plan for putting my … Continue reading

Spring Forward to Action 2006 – The Index

For those of you who weren’t with us last year, we hosted the Spring Forward to Action Challenge beginning when the clocks rolled forward. At the time, it was a pretty ambitious project for myself. Families.com was finding its legs and I was just catching my own stride here in the fitness blog. I enjoyed last year’s challenge and I’m hoping to make this year’s challenge as fun! Here’s an index of our Spring Forward to Action 2006 Fitness Plan. It’s got legs and if you’re up for the challenge feel free to use this one because it has more … Continue reading

Spring Forward to Action 2007: What Are We Doing?

It’s that time, time for us to spring forward to action. Well, actually the spring forward happened earlier this year than it typically does. In fact, I know a lot of people who were thrown by the clocks turning forward on March 11th. It was early enough that it stayed dark here until after 7:30 in the morning and if that doesn’t throw you, I don’t know what will. So here we are, a month later, to kick off our Spring Forward to Action fitness challenge. Last year, our Spring Forward challenge involved a detailed workout plan for every day … Continue reading
