Inmates, Stray Dogs, and Rehabilitation

Last night one of the local news stations reported what started out to be a sad story about bad dog owners leaving dogs out in the cold to fend for themselves. The reporter was following around animal control officers who were on “cold dog patrol.” They round up dogs left in yards with no food or water and very little or no shelter. In some cases the dogs have been completely abandoned as their owners have since moved on. Concerned neighbors called in to make sure the dogs got help. I was happy to hear there are laws against this. … Continue reading

Lost Dog Reunion Story: Rocko the Beagle

A couple of weeks ago I was listening to Today while washing dishes. Before they went to commercial I heard them talk about a story coming up in the next half hour. Something to do with a little girl who had lost her dog when she was five, but now, five years later, had been reunited with it. I had meant to watch it, but didn’t. (I think the phone rang and distracted me.) I did, however, scour the Internet to read about it. Rocko the Beagle Rocko the beagle started life with the Naranjo family in Queens, New York. … Continue reading

How Do You Earn a Roaming Stray Dog’s Trust?

Friday I wrote about the elusive stray dog roaming our neighborhood that I’ve seen every now and then for the past few weeks. I told Wayne about how she had ventured up to our front porch on Friday, but how she took off the second I tried to open the door. He’d never seen her –until Saturday morning. He offered to take me out for breakfast and that’s an offer I never refuse. As we headed out of our subdivision, Wayne asked, “Is that your dog?” I looked and saw Ms. Thing (other than being skittish, I haven’t spent enough … Continue reading

The Elusive Stray Dog Roaming Our Neighborhood

Drat! This morning the stray dog that’s been roaming our neighborhood the last few weeks eluded me again. I want to say it was about 3 weeks ago when I first saw her. But I wasn’t sure she was a dog. I spotted her when I was walking Murph at dusk one evening. She was up ahead about a block or so, trotting towards us. At first my guard went up. Stray dog with no owner in sight could spell trouble if she was an aggressive dog. But as soon as she spotted us, she high-tailed it between some houses … Continue reading

Everyone Wants Winky!

Last night while walking Murph I ran into Cindy, the neighbor who had found the stray Beagle and asked me to watch it for a couple hours last week. I had spoken to her husband since then and had unfortunately learned who Winky belonged to, but I didn’t know if they’d ever come to pick her up yet or not. (No one ever did find out what her real name is, so I’m still referring to her as Winky.) Anyway, yes, Cindy informed me, they did finally come get her. There went any thoughts of me attempting an adoption. But … Continue reading
