What is Shabby Chic?

My husband’s brother and his wife just moved into a new home. We had the chance to tour it the other night, and I must say it is beautifully decorated. The last room on the tour was my 11-year-old niece’s bedroom. It is a great place, big windows, even bigger closets, and several pieces of cozy, pastel colored furniture, accented with subtle floral prints. It worked well with the muted wall color and soft carpet. As I looked around, my sister-in-law announced that she and Cassie (my niece) chose to decorate the room in “Shabby Chic.” Shabby Chic… I had … Continue reading

Found Style

You may be wondering what exactly “found style” means. Well, it’s pretty simple. It means you have developed your own style from found items, and it usually refers to items that cost little or nothing. Someone may have given you a great piece of furniture or artwork that he or she no longer uses, or you may have found a great accessory in the attic although you are not quite sure where it originated. Interesting items like these often provide great inspiration for the rest of the space. You may also find great pieces in salvage centers or thrift stores, … Continue reading

Authoritarian Parenting: An Overview

Authoritarian parents believe in holding their children to a very high level of achievement and status. The desire for discipline is often so paramount in this relationship that the relationship, itself, is devoid or low on love, affection and nurturing. Many children of authoritarian parents equate success with love. One of the problems with authoritarian parenting is that children, when in need of guidance and problem-solving assistance, naturally turn to someone they feel loved … Continue reading

Review: Trading Spaces

Trading Spaces used to be my favorite show. I watched it faithfully every week, and if I had to miss it, I recorded it. I started watching when Paige Davis was the host and the format was a little different. These days, the show has no host. The couples trade keys and then trade spaces on their own. At some point during the adventure, they are told which designer is in their home. Instead of knowing in advance, which of the rooms will be made over, the couple doing the work in their friends’ home gets to choose one space … Continue reading

Get Inspired

I hear a lot of people say that they aren’t really too concerned with style and decor. They are more concerned with everyday function. “As long as the house is neat, and everything works okay, I’m happy.” Well, if you are one of those people, I say it’s time to get inspired. Function is important, but a marriage of function and style is even better. I think that many people who say they don’t care about style, simply don’t really know what style they like. That’s okay. Even if a person can’t tell the difference between contemporary and country, retro … Continue reading
