Pantry Challenge: Falling Off of the Wagon

How many individual packets of sugar does it take to make a half a cup? I’m proud, well, almost proud, to say I now know the answer. I officially ended our pantry challenge when I asked my husband to bring home a bag of sugar (and cold cuts and bread and milk and diapers). My moment of defeat came yesterday when I was faced with fact that it is already February, and we haven’t brought in the class snack for Andrew’s Kindergarten class. Not a problem, I thought, I’ll just make some sugar cookies. I got out the cookie cutters, … Continue reading

Tip of the Day- It’s No Sugar Day!

If you had a hard time getting through “No Soda Day”, here’s a real treat for you! Today, just for today, try to go without sugar. Sugar has been named the bad guy in many a health problem. The most apparent is diabetes, but it also can be a major player in depression, yeast infections, headaches, and obesity, just to name a few. I wouldn’t dare suggest that you or I go without it for longer than a day. That would be extreme measures indeed. You’d be rebelling against me in masses. I’d probably have to escort myself to the … Continue reading

Tip of the Day- It’s No Soda Day!

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not a big soda drinker. I’ll occasionally sip a soda when I’m out to dinner, but mostly I find the little bubbles annoying and the syrup too sweet. This averages out to a 12 ounce serving every day for every man woman and child. Yikes! Take a mental inventory. Do you know how much soda … Continue reading

Honey We’re Killing the Kids

No, not really – it’s just that’s the name of a reality television show on the Learning Channel. The show, while still falling into the shuddering category of reality television does offer a unique challenge in perspective as well as nutritional advice for families. Primarily, the show confronts the poor eating and health habits of families where the average family is giving their children about 40 teaspoons of sugar a day when they should only be getting 10. Shudder Imagine actually consuming 40 teaspoons of sugar in a day. You probably can’t – at least not without a sickening feeling … Continue reading
