Staying Safe at a Theme Park

Keep your baby safe while you are visiting a theme park with the following tips. Here at the Romans home, we are gearing up for those summer day trips. One place on our list is the Dutch Wonderland theme park, located in nearby Lancaster (Amish) County. This theme park is really geared up for little ones with gentle rides, strolling princesses and dragons and lots of fun activities. We are really looking forward to visiting and taking lots of photos of the kids in action, including our youngest who isn’t yet two. While theme parks can be fun, we always … Continue reading

Options for Summer Fun

My children have ten days left of school. Sometimes by this time of year, I am tired of the routine of mornings, homework, and packing lunches and am ready for school to be over. This year isn’t one of those years. Summer has really snuck up on me. I’ve got to get some stuff planned for the boys. They are all much too old to be interested in the sand box and bubbles. I do want them to have a lot of down time this summer, unscheduled fun – those days where they can just play and be creative. But … Continue reading

Labor Day Weekend – Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall

Labor Day weekend is almost here. We are looking forward to the annual hot air balloon festival and four day weekend. Four days off from school will be a nice break and a chance to catch up just a little on chores and homework. Many people consider Labor Day to be the end of the summer. It’s a good weekend to throw an end of summer party. Even though summer is ending, there’s still time for a couple of afternoons at the lake, a few more picnics, a few more hikes before the snow hits. We’ve had such a hot … Continue reading

End of Summer Party

All around the country, it’s time for back to school. I am mourning the loss of summer. We never seem to do all that we mean to do. Time and lack of finances prevent some things, but other things we just never get around to doing. A lot of people will celebrate the end of summer with one last cookout on Labor Day. But by that time we will have been in school for three weeks. We will feel like summer was over a long time ago. I like the idea of an end of summer party though. Here are … Continue reading

Last Minute Fourth of July Ideas

The Fourth of July always makes me a little sad. It means summer that is halfway done. The Fourth always means that by next week we will start seeing back to school displays in the stores. Tomorrow we are planning on hot dogs, potato chips, and homemade chocolate ice cream after a long hike in the mountains. And I have supplies for us to try a spray version of tie-dye t-shirts. I’ll let you know if it works. And we’ll hit our local fireworks show, too. I seem to specialize in last minute ideas for holidays. Here are some for … Continue reading

Summer Slushie Fun

Even though my children love slushies I hesitate to buy them often because I cringe at wondering just what exactly is used to make blue raspberry flavor. I’ve never seen a blue raspberry, and I’ve never seen a natural food that glowed in almost florescent colors. But slushies are fun. And they are a great way to cool off. A few summers ago we bought a snow cone maker. My thought was that we could pour our own real juices over the ice. That part worked, but we had to remember to freeze the ice in a special container. The … Continue reading

Four Frugal Summer Activities

Summer is a wonderful time to have some great family fun. My kids are so excited about the summer and all that they can do. Well, my son told his kindergarten teacher that he plans on spending the summer playing video games, so we will have to remedy that thinking, but I am sure it will be easy to accomplish; after all, kids were just made for summer fun. There are so many things to do that are free or low cost in the summer. Here are four frugal summer activities that you can do with your family. A Block … Continue reading

Homemade Ice Cream Fun

Last weekend, we decided to buy an ice cream maker. In some ways, it seems kind of silly to go to the trouble of making homemade ice cream when the store probably carries a hundred different and delicious varieties. I just like the idea of occasionally making our own ice cream, though. I like for the kids to know where things come from, and how they are made. I also like being able to make things from real ingredients instead of long chemicals that we can’t even pronounce. Making our own ice cream is fun, and it is not that … Continue reading

Renaissance Fair Family Fun

Good Day my Lords and Ladies! We just returned from the Colorado Renaissance Fair. These festivals are held all over the country. I urge you to take the kids and go to one. They are great fun, and are even a little educational. You will see people dressed in period costume – knights, lords, ladies, fairies, pirates, and even dragons. The workers even talk in accents. None of it is perfectly historically accurate. I’m pretty sure they didn’t have “Ye Olde Cash Machine” in medieval times. But all of that can raise a lot of questions about history. Why did … Continue reading

Unique Summer Learning

Learning and academic achievement do not have to stop during the summer months. However, your child does not have to study and attend class to have a successful and enriching summer. Children, like adults, need a break. While encouraging your child to continue learning and enhancing his knowledge, you should also let him enjoy his time off and have some fun. There are many ways to strengthen your child’s academics without making him endure class or study time. Summer is a wonderful opportunity for your child to grow academically in a less structure environment setting. Look to enroll your child … Continue reading
